Under New Proposal CAP to drop to 58M

Quote:
From Dreger of TSN
The cap for 2012-13 - projected to be $70.2 million under the existing CBA - would be cut to a fixed $58 million under the latest proposal.

That number would rise to a fixed $60 million in 2013-14 and then to a fixed $62 million the following year.

Projected cap numbers for the final three years of the deal include: $64.2 million in 2015-16, $67.6 million in 2016-17 and $71.1 million in 2017-18.

The league's proposal did not include an across-the-board reduction (or "rollback") to existing contract values. Necessary adjustments would be financed entirely from a combination of modified contracting practices, increases in league-wide revenue and from the players' Escrow contributions.

$58M cap with no salary rollbacks? 16 teams would be currently over that cap.

By making the players pay huge amounts in escrow. Then never giving that money back.

We can just dump deadweight like Gomez to the minors. As we stand currently that would put us under the cap. Depending on Subban's contract we'll just dump Kaberle. Under the cap with a minimal affect to the admittedly less than ideal talent on the roster.

Wouldn't be a big deal for the Leafs. Just bury Lombardi in the minors.

You would have to think the players count with something around atleast 65 million as the cap.

How is this even possible... half the teams in the league would be over the cap.

Of course, the $58M would probably be negotiated upwards, I'm guessing to $62-63M, and probably a small rollback of around 7-8%, that would allow almost all teams to get under.

Also heard that they would be allowed to clear current buyouts on the cap to the amnesty.

Toronto would be in a solid position as there are many expiring contracts on the horizon.

Don't the players realize that this would mean a lot of players getting waived?

I believe after the last CBA, players had a 24% salary rollback. A 24% decrease in their total salary is what I think it was.

If this is real, they will be playing on time. Amnesty buyouts + negotiations can solve most of this. The position of the cap this year really makes a rollback unnecessary.

Exactly.

This is what Burke has anticipated this entire summer. The Leafs will certainly be in a very good bargaining position with other teams frantically trying to trim payroll before the start of the season.

Yup, this is not good for the players and a huge headache for the GMs.
