Exactly... Hypocrites. I have respect for teams that not only respect not circumventing the cap, but also that are fiscally responsible. It only would make the league more fair. Teams like Philly, Detroit, Vancouver, more recently NJ and Buffalo are the ones that set players expectations for pay way to high then ***** about player salaries at the CBA and screw over the rest of the teams that play by the rules.
This. If the cap drops by 12.7 million, almost 20%, then existing contracts, even prior to July 1st only, should count for that much less. Players keep their full paycheques, the majority of teams avoid cap hell, and the ridiculous 58 million seems a little less ridiculous.
Except they wouldn't be getting their full pay cheques as they'd be putting a ton of money into escrow and never see it again.

When has Detroit set any salary expectations? They're one, if not the most fiscally responsible teams in this league. They have continuously received the so-called "hometown discount" since the salary cap started.
Oh boy. Their big UFA signing over this CBA signed a one year deal in Detroit for $7 million while turning down the Oilers $90 million contract. And New Jersey? I assume you mean the Kovolchuk contract. They had a pretty large investment not to keep him.
This is what stupid GMs get for going out and blowing their load before they were assured of the cap. They were warned about this.
Most teams would be able to adjust, and it probably wouldn't end up being 58 million anyway. The other GMs that didn't think can squirm for all I care.
The Canucks are fine. We move Luongo and stick with what we have as a team.
I outlined it in an earlier post. We still have more to drop then just Luongo. That aside, we would be losing him for nothing because no team is going to offer much more than a pick when they know we have to drop salary. Worse, Toronto likely would be out of the running, leaving us with little to no options.

All those players took discounts to play for us. Of that list only Bieska is debatable while Kesler wasn't quite the player he is today at the time of his signing. Meanwhile, it was publicly stated Hamhuis and Garrison left sizable portions of the pie to come to Vancouver, Burrows' contract is just disgusting and frankly, if we ignore term, Luongo's is great. So what precedence have we set exactly?

I don't know how this is done, they would at least need to amnesty some of the contracts waived if there is no rollback. Pretty big gamble for the NHLPA if you ask me. Not to mention if they allow that, teams they think are sitting in the 50 millions range trying to reach the current floor are going to dump contracts with this same clause to get to the new bottom floor. This is going to cost a lot of guys a lot of money. Sure more than half the union has no need to be concerned so it should carry in a vote, but man this could have spectacular fallout.
Actually we don't need to trade them anywhere; Backstrom and Bouchard's contracts end this year. Bouchard is a long shot on coming back and we can stick on the LTIR due to concussion systems. Backstrom we can drop in the minors. We can also stick Cullen in the minors as well.
I hope they put a stop to burying players in the minors. Gm's should be stuck with the contracts they give out.
It's been done before and I don't think the NHLPA will go for that nor the owners.
Arguing for Minnesota, we're just swapping out parts sooner than later. Cullen and Backstrom are more than likely gone unless Backstrom takes a massive pay cut. Bouchard as well.

It's also annoying having to string along teams like Colorado, Columbus, Florida, Phoenix etc that are losing money every year.

At some point people need to realize the free spending days of big bad Detroit are over. They play by the rules established. They have been very fiscally conservative, notice how they are already cap compliant with this coming in. You can claim Ilitch nows a little too much and is probably a little too powerful because the Wings seem to know more about realignment or where negotiations might head and I think that is fair and something I question. But they aren't the ultimate bad guys in here. Even if they redid cap rules Franzen's and Zetterberg's deals do not jump astronomically. Those are their two "cap circumvention" contracts. They have offered exactly one front loaded deal to Suter and came in embarrassingly low on Parise, because as some have speculated you need to offer both guys contracts to make them happy and the Wings hoped Parise would re-sign in New Jersey. The Suter signing would have altered plans up front and they would have kept the figures under 60 million or right around there in case of this scenario. They have been talking about the CBA for a while and Holland has said on several occasions he would not push the upper boundaries if he didn't think the new CBA would hit those numbers.
The new rules here would hurt a bunch in attempts to re-sign Filppula and Howard. But this isn't 2002, the Wings have been operating under a new principle for a while now whether or not people want to still call them the Yankees of hockey. They have invested in the farm system and pay their own talent. Even back in the day part of what made their astronomical salary numbers was paying guys like Draper and McCarty a premium for loyalty. In the rush to paint them evil a lot is overlooked. The Wings highest paid players were Fedorov, Yzerman and Lidstrom. All homegrown guys, they take care of their own first.

Not really. Cullen and Bouchard aren't in the long term plans as far as this organization goes. Bouchard's loss was only felt because he was the only offensive guy we had. With Granlund, Larsson, Coyle, Zucker and Phillips coming in, we may do better patching than last year. Cullen just...was too streaky and doesn't fit in the top 6 anymore.
Backstrom might be felt but Harding has certainly pushed him and Hackett is a very competitive backup and while he could use another season to season in the AHL, making the leap from AHL to NHL now maybe not so rough.
