I think we should package him with Spezza and Silfverberg to get Sam Gagner now. I don't know if the Oilers would bite though since Gagner is a generational talent.

That said, it is a gamble still. Turris has showed signs of being special but he's also looked unremarkable. If he turns out the way we hope, and his flashes become more regular, this is a laughing steal. As devil's advocate, we haven't seen enough of the kid to be sure of that yet. I'm cautiously optimistic, but maybe not as gung ho as most seem to be.
You just have to look at the deal from the defensive standpoint and treat any offensive progression as a bonus.

Last season Turris was our best defensive center and his line was used by 'Stache most often against the best players of the other team (though some of the reason behind that was that Alfie was on his line)

$3.5mil per is about what good defensive centers get on the open market. Considering the last two years of the deal are buying out UFA years, this deal is a slight overpayment only if he doesn't progress in his offensive development at all.

You're right but I don't think most people are looking at it that way. Maybe I'm wrong, but most seem to assume he will progress that way. This deal cements him as our #2 centre. I'd like someone with offense in that position. Turris might be that guy, but he's still unproven to me. If his offence progresses, we got a laughing steal, but if it doesn't, we've got an overpaid #3 centre.

Again, I like the deal, I think its a worthy gamble, but I still think it's a gamble. I'd say we're better than 50%, though, hence a great gamble.

this is for 13/14, he is still paid 1.4M this coming year which is a pretty good deal.

Is there something in between laughing steal and overpaid centre?

If his offense stay the same as last year, we will have a 50pts 2nd line centre with excellent defensive skills @ 3.5M, in my book it's a bargain.

I hate how every argument about Gagner is "He had a 8-point game, your player didn't, so Gagner is better."

I think it's a good gamble. Obviously BM thinks Turris is worth a 5 year investment.

He'll be a steal by the end of it.

I think this deal makes a lot of sense from both sides and I'll tell you why.

For Turris he gets locked in with some job security. He picks up a long term deal and can cement his place on a growing team moving towards a brighter future. He gets to settle down in Ottawa knowing he will be here for the forseeable future. He gets a guarenteed paycheque of 3.5mil, that he really hasn't earned YET but is projected to be such a player.

He could play next season and light things up leading to a larger salary but at the same token he could have a bad year, or get injured, and be left with a horrble looking track record leaving him to a much smaller salary on his next contract. So in the end both sides came to an agreement. The Senators staff believe that Turris can turn into a player worth more then 3.5/yr so decided to trust their evaluations and sign him hoping they get a bargain going forward. Turris signs for guarenteed money.

Everyone become a sponsor and make their signature a picture of Karlsson with the Norris.

Plus to note, if the CBA negotiations work out where there is a rollback but the players still get the salaries that were committed to them like suggested then Turris is smart locking in now because his contract worth would be worth less if the new CBA was signed tomorrow.

I'm excited to think what this kid can do with 13 more pounds on him. I was one of his biggest critics last season because I couldn't stand how many board battles he lost to bigger and stronger players. Despite that I thought he was dependable in the defensive end because of his excellent positioning and stickwork. With some weight on him finally he could turn into one of the better 2nd line centers in the league, offensively AND defensively.

Talk about expectations totally out of whack.

Gagner is a millennial player.

Apparently greedy self-centered ****** with huge entitlement issues sign club friendly five year contract extensions these days.

Wait a minute.

That must make Alfredsson...oh no...no no no...better take down the posters. Nachogate was only the beginning.
