Lexington Barbecue (that is THE Lexington Barbecue, or Lexington Barbecue #1) is pretty great. One of my favorites. It has been a staple of my trips between Charlotte and Raleigh. I haven't been to any of the other Lexington places, so I don't know how they compare. Generally, though, I prefer eastern style (whole hog with vinegar based sauce) over western (shoulder with a more tomato based sauce), but I have found that Lexington Barbecue almost tastes to me like a hybrid of the two. It seems more vinegary sauce wise than most western style.

Maybe a little late here but I'll chime in:

Asheville has "The Orange Peel", a pretty well known live music venue. Rolling Stone magazine has praised it a couple of times.

The Grove Park Inn is a hella nice place. President Obama stayed there during (I think) his '08 campaigning. It's pricey obviously but it's definitely worth the $$ if you can get a night or two there.

And Winston-Salem's ballpark is pretty sweet (haven't been to Asheville's). But the Dash will always be the Warthogs in my eyes.

Hey guys, a few of my boys and I are planning on coming down for the Ranger-Cane game in March. We'll either drive down and get there Thursday night or fly in Friday morning (Saturday game). This would leave ample time to see most things in the city, right? Also, how much should we be expecting to pay for lower bowl tickets? Finally, any food places in the area that we have to hit? Thanks.

Lots of restaurants. Are you looking really high end or nice bar food or southern comfort or BBQ. Be a little more specific.

If you buy from ticketmaster you can get lowers or under $75. From Stub Hub I've seen them in the $40s or less.

Be more specific. Also what type of hotel you looking at. We can probably steer you in good places.

But we don't have a subway, and the arena is not close to the city, so if you fly down, either rent a car or stay at a hotel downtown (and ride the game shuttle to the arena).

Depending on the weather there might be tailgating going on in the parking lot. Lots of good food and plenty of beer to go round.

Nothing too pricey. Just looking for a famous local southern/BBQ place.

It's a little pricey but amazing.

Old Time BBQ in Cary and Smokeys in Morrisville are much cheaper and more of the Traditional eastern NC BBQ. Plus the BBQ in the arena is PHENOMINAL.

A lot of people don't like The Pit; I've always had awesome food there. If you want the cheaper more traditional and historic NC barbecue experience, though, you've got to hit Clyde Cooper's downtown.

Personally I don't like the Pit (they have one in Chapel Hill, maybe they changed it though), but that's because I'm not really a vinegar-based guy.

The only location has always been in Raleigh, though they have announced they are going to open a second location in Durham. It is eastern style (vinegar-based), though.

I liked The Pit, but it's a bit pricey and kind of fancy when you think of traditional BBQ. I echo what SV said. Old Time in Cary is great and much cheaper..but out of an old diner vs. the valet parking at the Pit.

I'm thinking of "The Pig," in Chapel Hill, my bad. I believe they USED to be called "The Pit," though, first went there when I was 7 or 8 and didn't like it. I could be wrong though.

Still, not an eastern guy haha.

Lucky for you, then, that The Pit's 'que is only basically seasoned and it's left up to you to choose Eastern or Western sauces to place on it.

Actually they have Eastern and Western sauces on the table so you can choose how you want to dress your barbeque. And don't remind me about the second location in Durham. I fear it will completely ruin the food truck culture at Fullsteam. (Empire Eats purchased the building Fullsteam's in and is going to place The Pit's Durham location in the building.)

Riddle me this guys since we're talking Q here.

Does anyone else not like slaw? Everyone in my family thinks I'm crazy for not liking it. Smithfields BBQ is pretty notorious for piling it on.

Barbecue is one of my favorite foods, yet I hate slaw. Never let that stuff soil my cue.

Can't stand it. I'm more a fan of Western NC style Q, but it didn't take long for me to start liking the Eastern style stuff when I moved down here.

But slaw is just not something I can get behind.

Slaw=terrible. And I can tolerate NC vinegar-based barbeque, but I prefer Western tomato-based barbeque.
