I made this thing and I only know one person on HF outside of HF, and he's a poster on the Habs board.

I don't know any of you personally, but I do have a white van filled with floor diagrams of each of your bedrooms.

Seriously? It's a sign of respect for God's holy name. YHWH (rendered in full) = I Am ('I Am that I Am), the name God identified himself with to Moses on Mount Horeb way back when (scholarly debate persist to this day on the actual words but we don't need to get into that). Jewish tradition that it should not be pronounced by mortal lips, hence the truncation. First written document with this particular spelling is from the 16th century - a carry over from the oral tradition.

That said, if anyone actually votes for me they're just not paying close enough attention.

You'll probably need to make a few changes to mine since I renovated the en-suite bathroom.

Lets look at the Bible:

"You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain." - Exodus 20:7

You might recognize this passage as referring to the third commandment in the Ten Commandments. But what does it mean? Most people today take it to mean not using God's name as a curse. You can probably figure out what current iterations fit that definition.

You probably also have heard the name Yahweh and might have wondered where that came from. Well the Israelites to whom God gave the commandments and the Law took that third commandment VERY seriously. To take something in vain means to take it in a casual way. How much do your pay attention to what is written down on a piece of paper? Not much usually. In fact every day we throw away in the garbage lots of paper with writing on it. Labels and things that we write that are not quite right, advertising, newspapers etc.

So what if God's name was on that paper? Would throwing out a piece of paper with God's name written on it be disrespectful? Well the Isrealites came up with a solution to the problem. They did not write his name out. Instead they left out the vowels. And wrote the Hebrew letters Yod He Vod He. Or in English YHVH – which we translated into the word Yahweh and later Jehovah. (Side note: The Hebrew pronunciation for YHVH is Adonai)

Nice post AP.

One minor thing though: Adonai = my Lord or my Master. It's not so much how you pronouce YHWH but an acceptable substitute during prayer to avoid speaking the holy name. The only place where The Name is pronounced is the Temple of Jerusalem.

I'd usually vote for MoO but gave my vote to DefenseMinister, who is probably the most underrated poster around here
