Sabres to Build 2 New Rinks in Buffalo

The Sabres were awarded a bid to build two new rinks across from the First Niagara Center along with a hotel, parking lot, and themed restaurant. The rinks will be used for tournaments, public use, and other younger leagues as well as practice ice when needed for the Sabres. Looks like it will be a great thing for hockey in Buffalo!

And here's a look at the full proposal.

Love seeing teams working to build the sport at the ground level. IIRC, the Preds are working on building two new rinks as well.

It will be a large improvement over what's currently downtown in that spot.

Looking at the proposal it appears that site prep would begin in January and full construction would start in Feb/March. The parking garage and retail/restaurant space would be complete in July 2014, and the ice facility would open in September 2014 in time for traditional hockey season. The hotel would be complete in June of 2015.

Was hoping Pegula would win that bid. Should start making Buffalo more of a hockey destination from lower levels up, with increased ability to host tournaments (and the teams and their families in the hotel).

Thats what I love. He really is making this into "Hockey Heaven" from the ground up. These kids playing in rinks with Sabres logos all over will go a long way to inspiring them to go for the NHL. In 15 years I can see the amount of hockey players entering the NHL from WNY increasing.

For sure. I really admire te approach he's taken and how he's following up on his claims to make Buffalo a " hockey heaven". Making the Sabres into a winning team will be a big part of that, but no doubt this kind of stuff, the FNC renovations, and the way he treats players will add up and contribute as well. Can't wait to see what Buffalo's reputation around the league is like with him as the owner, say, 10 years from now.

And of course a super solid franchise increases any prospects that might exist for a Hamilton franchise.

Let's go Buffalo!

It's also been noted that a Tim Horton's is planned to be opened there, and New Era is planning to either move their Buffalo flagship store or open up a second there: http://www.buffalonews.com/city/comm...cle1028591.ece

... ya, this new owner theyve got is really good one, very much the civic minded, benevolent & munificent type who loves the game. Enlightened. Id be very surprised if he didnt both endorse & embrace a nearby rivalry with Hamilton as it would do nothing but help as opposed to hurt his bottom line despite the long standing arguments to the reverse.

I'm glad Buffalo ended up in the hands of a strong, involved, and wealthy owner. It's good for hockey as a whole.

More and more fantastic news! Buffalo is a great hockey town and a really nice city ta boot.

I wish I had a dollar for every time a canadian customs officer sniffed out our leftover 50-wing platter and said "your car smells gooood" on the way home after a show or a game or a weekend in eville.

... that takes me back. The best are apparently at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo or Duffs' in Amherst.
Worth the trip for that alone. Close to being the best food on the planet. Gotta love ChickenWings done right.

Can't say I'm a fan of Duffs. The sauce has a weird creamy flavor. Their chiavettas wings are great though. But for regular wings I'd go to Anchor(if you wanna pay out the nose) or just some of the local pizza places.

Haha yes, and even closer to Duffs. I've only been to the Anchor bar twice though. Their wings are good but...wings are so easy to make and they charge so much ($1.10 a wing!). Heck there's a bar near me that does decent enough wings for 10 cents a wing so you can imagine why I don't bother with Anchor. I think some of my favorite wings I've had so far was at Dwyer's Irish Pub in North Tonawanda. Lots of different styles to choose from.

Guess what?

Anchor Bar's first Canadian location will set up shop in downtown Hamilton right by Copps Coliseum in Jackson Sqaure.

Seeing how few seats are in these rinks, I think no.
