Best Buy has a 100% bonus trade-in credit promotion going on right now for in-store trade ins. NHL 12 has a trade-in value of $10, so with the promotion you'd get $20.

That's an insanely good amount. I think I'll trade in my copy tomorrow and play the crap of the demo for two weeks.

I thought about that also, but heard that the Best Buy trade-in process is a pain in the ass: i.e. lots of paperwork and even a fingerprint scan. It may still be worth it because once NHL 13 comes out, you know the game will be collecting dust, and will never be worth more than a few bucks.

So what do you guys think will be the overpowered attributes this year?

Based on how the demo works, I'd say you'll need big points in acceleration and agility. Speed I'm not convinced will be as important as it was in 12, and I think you'll need to have pretty decent values in balance and strength to be able to skate properly too.

I also don't know how important deking will be this year. I usually ran it 85-90 for 12, but I'm thinking that between 80-85 will be sufficient in this year's game.

They fixed speed in 12, so I don't think they'll go around and make it useless again in 13. I think it will be the same as always: high speed and agility with a good amount in accel, and whatever you have left in endurance and balance/strength.

Also I sold my copy to Best Buy just now. Made me scan my right thumb but otherwise it was painless.

Took my 20 bucks and used it on a kindle gift card.

The way the new skating engine seems to work, I think if you have high acceleration and agility, you can probably avoid the wide turns even at full speed. High acceleration might also allow you to stop and start a lot quicker without as much momentum effect (as I like to call it).

I'm just speculating of course, the full game will probably be different than the demo.

Also, the pull back wrister is way too effective in the demo.

Yeah, most top shelf shots seem to work.

I'm assuming it's because of the low difficulty setting and not because of the bad AI, but we'll see in a few weeks.

Can't find any information on how long Best Buy will 100% match the trade-in values. Hopefully they keep it going for at least another week or so.

From what I saw online, people are saying until the end of the month, or until October 6th. I guess YMMV.
$20 is a pretty great deal this late into the game.

I was playing on Superstar and I scored with the exact same wristshot three times in a row, with Gagne, King and Kopitar. Hopefully EA fixes that, otherwise it's even easier to pull off than the curl shot.

My hopes just went up for EA actually paying attention this year. They've already fixed the back skate glitch on penalty shots after seeing the response from the community. Maybe they'll actually be able to keep up with the glitchers this year without destroying the game in the process.

But did they fix the backskate all the way to the crease with no pressure?

That's the most gamebreaking part of it imo.

Well we all know they're going to patch up the speed and make it the same game as the previous year after a few weeks anyway.

I hate that they just end up cranking up the speed to cover problems every year. A slower game would actually be more fun because it would create more time to be crafty and let plays develop. But nope, EA just throttles up and everyone plays the same breakneck back-and-forth game of trading chances and firing long breakout passes to cherry pickers.

I was playing the demo yesterday night and it felt weird, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Maybe its just me but that whole "speed" thing doesn't feel like it works at all. There was several instances where I should have clearly turned the corner and blow past the last d man for a breakaway and I don't see an excellent scoring chance develop at all.

The other thing is I find the shooting to be a bit wonky. But I think this happens every year with me. I can't figure out why the puck isn't elevating for me, but then I get the game and and it starts to make sense.

Why you mad, bro? If you're having problems with cherry picking, you're not playing defense right. I score all the time on these cherry pickers

I'm not saying I have trouble with it. I'm saying it's boring because the high speed makes almost everyone play the exact same way.

I don't think so. I haven't looked into the mode too much, can you fill in the rest of the teams with AIs?
I was thinking of either doing that or making a league (random number generator to assign teams), but only a few of us play OVP.

I'm pretty sure you will be able to have AIs for the rest of the teams. You don't have to play games yourself. You can build your own AI and have them for you, you can have 6 others play the games for you in OTP type of game, or you can play the games OVP style. EA improved the AI for GM mode so they won't be as stupid as in past years.

What is it that everyone will be playing together online? Do you create a team and play the positions online? I have only played single-player GM modes and HUT, so I never got into team oriented online play because I never knew enough people. I would love to hop onto a team when sign ups start!

I might be able to play a bit this year, maybe all of September. Hopefully you all missed my smack talk.
