Many top players in the NHL today were not considered to be top end prospects either, you never know who that future all star might be.

Could be? Sure. But our top end talent is iffy, IMO.
The closest thing we have to a bluechip is Smith, who is 23, and, IMO, has enough holes in his game to make me question whether he's going to be a legit top 2 defenseman.
I think Nyquist is also top 6 material. But I'm not 100 percent sold on that just yet.
