The fact is the market is set for 2nd contracts for young stars with a mix of proven production and overall star potential.

The only way to fix it is have 5 year ELCs, taking away the option for kids to earn 6 million until at least their 6th season in the NHL.

Problem is the PA will never agree to something like that because it will mean these kids will be severely underpaid for a good portion of that deal if they play well.

Nice Going Eberle

Worth every penny and even with that term he is still in his 20's when he is becomes a UFA.

He got that once so far. I'm saying that if he continues to put up those numbers, he's well worth the contract, but I'd rather see him show that he can put up those numbers again and not have a long term second contract that brings him to UFA in his prime, then give a contract like that.

How well would that sit with you if you were in his position?

"Well Jordan, we know you were one of the top 15 scorers in the world last year, but we want to pay you for that success once you prove you can do it for 3 years".

I can tell you if my employer told me that, I would be taking interviews for a new one the next day.

After the signings of Pacioretty, Skinner, Tavares, Kane, Toews, etc., the market is set and you either pay your young players or someone else will take them off your hands.

I'd argue against this sort of contract but all Eberle has to do is point at what sort of contracts were being given out this year to get this deal done.

If he asked for 7 or 8 mill+ over that term? Sure I would tell him to prove he can repeat first. But 6 mill for what is expected to be your top line RW is good...gamble or not.

Not a chance that either of the 2 take less that Shawn horcoff. On that note, they should be making 7 in comparison. This is a step in the right direction to say the least. 18 mil for what may be the best pp in hockey next year isn't all that bad

How many better or as good natural right-wingers at around Eberle's age are there (say, aged 24 and under)? Who of them would you take over Eberle? If you do this exercise, you realize just how special Eberle is.

Good deal. He and Hall have set the precedent for the Oilers top four.

Sure I do, but not at that price at this stage in their careers.

I can't believe Tambelini (sp?) has a job...all he's done is fail, and draft high during his tenure...

How would he be a god?

It's not like he's found these guys in unknown places...with the exception of Eberle, it was "The Oilers are proud to select 1st overall..."

Pretty easy if you ask me...

I mean like getting these four players all locked up in long term 6mil plus contracts while having guys like Schultz and Klefbom eventually earning top dollar as well. Thats a lot of star players to fit under the salary cap..

There guys fall under RFA until what 27?

Any player would take $6 million a year during their RFA years...even if they give up a year or two...they still made out like bandits.

I love watching the Oilers...they're my second favorite team...but with Tambo leading the charge, it will never happen...

The offensive power is fun to watch, but there are too many holes to be filled in the back..IMO it's going to be a long frustrating road ahead...

That's nice. I'm sure that you were thinking the same thing as a Senators fan in 10/11 before your club played way over their collective heads in 11/12.

Oh wait, you have Karlsson and he single-handedly transformed the Sens from cellar-dweller to contender. IMO the Senators still have work to do and will be hard-pressed to repeat 11/12's performance.

It's easy to talk following a period of success. I'm sure that a lot of Oilers fans will make fools of themselves again if the Oilers manage to cobble together a strong first month to the season like they did in 11/12.

What exactly has Tambo done that is considered to be failure? I don't get how this is still going around.. I mean, almost every move he has made has been good. The Penner trade, the Visnovsky trade, the Gilbert trade. All of these big deals the Oilers would do again without thinking twice. His drafting has been outstanding so far, and while MacGregor is the man making these decisions, Tambellini is also a big part of it. Has Tambo done much to the defense? No. But you could argue his patience with addressing that need this summer in signing Schultz was just extremely smart. If he had overpayed for a defenseman in Free Agency would we have Nugent-Hopkins or Yakupov? Well, probably not, and now we have both as well as Schultz. Now, yes Schultz basically chose us but if we had never signed Schultz I'm sure Tambellini would have been all over the top defenseman available this off-season. We're in the stage where we can now build around our core that we've developed through the draft. Be ready to see Tambo making much more agressive moves through trade and Free Agency.

And what do you mean Tambellini, himself, has failed? I'm pretty sure Tambellini is not playing for the Oilers. We've been killed with injuries the past few seasons and have had underacheiving veterans sinking the ship.

Here's your dilemma. You can't get an Eberle talent at his age on the Senators unless you are willing to pay the money he got.

So, you either pay the money or you don't keep your talent.

In what Universe is 6 million per for Eberle a fair/good deal? I didn't know the guy's second name was Stamkos.

Nah, Stamkos got 7.5million whilst giving up 1 less UFA year and signed it when the salary cap was lower, but hey its can be an identical contract in your universe if you like.

Stamkos is getting 2 million more, giving up less ufa years.

Eberle was 12th in the league in scoring and an Allstar, under 22 years. You realize that right?
