Why don't we see long term deals with low $ ?

I think the best example of this might be Ehrhoff for 10 years at 4 million. Long term and not a high caphitt.

I don't think those players owe anything to Edmonton or Carolina. Why should they take a discount to play there.

Not really fair because who knows what the cap will really be. You can't deny that Tambellini and Rutherford made those deals knowing that the cap could change next season.

I think OP is eluding to the fact that these contracts used to provide great cap hit discounts while providing the player with an adequate salary. Kovalchuk @ 6.66M, Ehrhoff @ 4M, Zetterberg @ 6M, Franzen @ 3.95M, Keith @ 5.5M.....now it seems like the cap hits are staying high (+7.5M), which eliminates the point of front loading deals in the first place.

In theory great. Fact is, they'll be a team B who's willing to up the price. Always is.

I think it was 5 years at about 1.85 million or thereabouts. Not a bad deal for him, so far so good for the Flyers also.

Not necessarily... there are some bottom-line players who thrive without having to deal with contract every year or every second year.

Glencross deserves it he started breaking out later in his career and still has a nice amount in the tank at 29 to play until 34 and produce 45-55pts @ 2.55 it's a steal if you ask me especially when Habs paid 2.5M for Prust who brings some nice energy but doesn't have the O skills that Glencross possess.

Simple really. A player making $3m doesn't want to lock into that deal in case something clicks and they begin getting better as a player. A team signing a player for $3m doesn't want to lock him up long term because anything could happen, and in this league there are plenty of $3m-type players.

Also, long term deals help(ed) teams reduce cap hits for their most expensive players. No need in reducing an already low cap hit.

I was definately hoping for 5.5 or 5.75. I knew it wasnt going to be less then that. So overpaid but only by a bit. Maybe the oilers generosity inspires loyalty and on their UFA contracts they stay and take a bit less

I don't think we'll be seeing these types of deals anymore, but the Isles got pretty lucky signing Frans Nielsen (his previous contract, 4 yrs/$2.1M) and Andrew MacDonald's contract. The Isles took a small risk offering them multi-year deals so early in their careers, paid off nicely.

I think Pacioretty 6 yrs/4.5 is worth the risk, he's worth as much or more if he's healthy.
