Lol. Good point. Flames drafted and traded Patrick Holland though. Peter is with Anaheim.

If Button is good at picking out talent, it's not like big Canadian kids that can hit aren't of value to NHL teams, he just never found any. And yes those players look nice and they're tracking decently but how many do you expect to actually make impacts at the NHL level? I know the Oilers have a very "deep" prospect pool right now, I'm not expecting all 8 of our top 8 prospects to make an NHL impact. For a Detroit or Nashville, 1/5 picks is a success. That is the class of the league - this is an extremely inexact science. I wouldn't suspect Calgary to have a rate increase of 5% to 25% immediately just because you changed "drafting philosophies."

So you say the philosophy changed in 2009 when Erixon was picked, there's been 4 drafts since then, let's assume a generous increase to a 15% hit rate on those 24 picks, you're still looking at 3.5, so 3 to 4 real NHL players. Of the prospects you named, Bartschi and Erixon look on track and then you will have one or two more if you are lucky and one of them is probably going to be a fourth line/bottom pair. That's just the way drafting works, not all your prospects reach their upside.
I understand what you are trying to say, and I understand that the draft really is a crap shoot and that a very small percentage of prospects are developed well enough to reach their true potential.

However, your original statement was that you believed that Jankowski WILL be a bust based on statistics from an old regime, scouting department, and draft philosophy.

And I agree with you on Todd button, his record as a scout has been extraordinarily poor with the Flames, but now with a larger scouting staff he is a much smaller part of "the whole".

I will also like to point out that perhaps Detroit and Nashvilles draft success is due to a strong foundation in player development rather than picking all the best prospects.

As of right now it seems that Jankowski is being given time to develop the proper way, playing in college to allow for more time to accumulate mass, but only time will tell how he develops and if he ever does.

Is it fair to put the blame on his shoulders though? I say absolutely not.

Look at his body of work at little more closely and you would realize he has had very little to work with. You have to remember he is not the one who acquires these picks, or even makes the final decision for that matter.

In his twelve years as head scout in Calgary he has had just four top twenty selections in the draft.

2001 - Chuck Kobasew (14th), Good Selection in a relatively weak draft
2002 - Eric Nystrom (10th), Mediocre selection in a relatively weak draft
2003 - Dion Phaneuf (9th), Great selection in a extremely deep draft
2011 - Sven Baertschi (13th), Undecided, but appears like a great selection

Then of the remaining seven first round picks you can only rule out Matt Pelech and Kris Chucko as guaranteed misses at this point. They were taken 24th, and 26th respectively which is historically an area in which a team would happily take an everyday NHL player.

From the span of 2002-2010, Todd Button had just three 2nd round picks to work with in nine years. To expand even further on that he only had one second round pick (Mitch Wahl) from 2004-2010.

With the lack of quality selections he has had to work with, is it really surprising that the organization as a whole has struggled to turn out players consistently? To me the blame should be put solely on the shoulders of Darryl Sutter who seemingly neglected the importance of player development and scouting.

It is still funny to see Darryl being ripped for his drafting.

Michel Goulet was a hire by Darryl, not Feaster. When Darryl took over as the Flames GM, there was a shared farm team out of the Flames' control, Todd Button, and 2 other scouts. That was it. There was no drafting/development plan.

Darryl took over, and drafted a lot of busts. However, he saw the 'problem'. He managed to get the Flames to create the Heat - full control over development of prospects. He started hiring additional scouts. Development staff...

Sutter didn't always draft just big Western Canadian kids - he went off the 'grid' so to speak more often than people realize. Just look it up.

In the last couple of years of Darryl's tenure, the drafting philosophy dramatically changed. Emphasis was placed on "High Hockey IQ" - this wasn't a Feaster or Weisbrod implementation. They merely just kept expanding on it, and hired even more scouts.

Yes, the Flames are still easily in the bottom half of the league with respect to prospects - but they are climbing up. Things started to improve under Darryl, and Feaster is taking that ball and running with it.

Also, the Flames are not stupid for trying to build around Iginla and winning now, and they are not stupid for refusing to 'blow it up'. They ARE rebuilding - but trying to stay competitive while doing so. Are they stupid for doing that? Well, time will tell. Anyone's opinion on that matter is just that - an opinion. If this doesn't work out, then Feaster gets canned and the team does something else. Until it either works or doesn't, then that is all you have - an opinion. I am curious to see it through to be honest - a bit different than the 'traditional rebuilds' or whatever you want to call it.

Now, as for the main point of this thread - Jankowski - The Flames drafted who they thought was the best available center at the time - the one with the most upside. They scouted him very, very thoroughly. Only time will tell if he develops into a top line center or not. He has the size, the skating ability, the vision, the playmaking ability.. he has it 'all' for his age - but is a bit raw.

Jankowski does have a high ceiling - but we will all have to wait and see how close he comes to reaching it. He may bust, he may become elite, or he may fall somewhere in between. Anyone's opinion - including my own - is basically an uninformed opinion at this point. Let's give this kid a chance to show what he is all about this upcoming season before we label him one thing or another.

Jankowski scores 3:15 into his collegiate career; PC now leads Sacred Heart 5-0 in the second period, as Jankowski nets his second goal of the game.

I'm actually hoping Jankowski becomes a legit #1 just to see the reactions. It'll be great the day he hits like 90 points and people are completely bewildered.

I'd be disappointed if he became anything less than sport defining.

Maybe an invite, but probably won't play with the lockout and the talent that will be available.....

Next year maybe. The kid is still so young. 2 - 3 days later and he would be in the 2013 draft.

Very unlikely. Canada tends to invite mostly CHL players and with a player as young as Jankowski in the NCAA he would have to be nothing short of amazing for him to be invited.

You might see him next year if he continues to impress.

Phil Di Giuseppe got an invite last year to the camp from the NCAA and he wasn't even drafted yet. I wouldn't be so sure that he doesn't get an invite.

Zero chance he gets an invite the WJ camp. Strome, RNH, MacKinnon... plus, he's playing in the NCAA.

I agree he won't get an invited...although I don't think the NCAA has anything to do with it...Toews' played at the WJC twice when he was at UND (obviously Toews was a much better player...I just mean NCAA doesn't preclude you from playing).

Solid first game for Jankowski. 2goals, and solid defensive play. Can't wait to see him in action again tomorrow!

I believe I read somewhere that Sacred Heart is one of the weakest teams in the NCAA. True?

Its very true, they are also a very small school haha, but I wouldn't take that as a slight on Jankowski

I am pretty pumped he is playing with Providence, looking forward to getting to see him a lot

Hockey East is a tough conference, hes got his work cut out for him

He'll have a big step up today against Boston University but it's good that he's got some confidence under his belt.

I hope he rips it up this year. Would be sick to see so many people around here eat crow. Kid deserves a chance before being treated like he is on here.
