The Matteau trade up stuff, IIRC, originated from Martin McGuire of 98,5 FM the night before the draft and his claim the Habs wanted him enough to trade up...which is possible, but they most likely valued Collberg more. At some point in the late 20's, they probably thought the odds of Collberg falling to #33 were good and they probably felt Collberg+using a 2nd rounder to move up from 33 > Matteau in value.

Grant wrote here that Collberg was high on our list (perhaps even close to the top 10) right after the pick was made and I am fairly certain he also stated he was well ahead of Matteau on the list.

It's all hypothetical, and Grant will know more than me, but I'd think that Timmins never thought Collberg would be available even late 1st. Which then made Matteau the next target. But since Collberg was still available, I'd bet he'd still wanted to move up and even harder than for Matteau....but every team wanted to pick and the price was too high. Timmins only had to wait and pray.

I'd still believe we'll see A LOT OF TEAMS banging their head on walls in the "Why didn't we pick him" game. From Collberg, to Kerdiles, to a whole lot of people. People might say what they want about 2012, but there's quite a few 2nd rounders guys out there that will be big time steals.

The Habs did not try to trade up for Matteau...not sure where McGuire got that info.

Here's an article on their site about it from the 21st of June:

http://www.985sports.ca/hockey/nouve...re-153067.html

Quote:

Turns out it was Dany Dube, not McGuire who said it. For those who can't decipher that quote, Dube says ''Matteau interests them...from what we heard from being around members of the front office, he's a player that the members of the organization like. He would fit in well in the new philosophy in place.''

Matteau was at the Habs combine, so I have to imagine he was in their top 30. If Collberg had gone 15th-20th like he probably should have, things may have been different and the desire to get Matteau via a trade-up could have been higher. But with both still available in the late 20's, it made little sense to use a pick to move up when one was likely to be there at 33.

We'll probably never know what the actual strategy was...

Gally's 1st pre-season game this afternoon:

Ryan Yessie ‏@RyanHPscout
1st thing I noticed on @CanadiensMTL Alex Galchenyuk is the new "A" on his jersey. He looks at another level than everyone else on the ice.

Brendan Ross ‏@RossyYoungblood
Galchenyuk had several scoring chances in 1st & also created several others. Deceptive on the attack. Hard to tell if he'll shoot or pass

Brendan Ross ‏@RossyYoungblood
Alex Galchenyuk playing great to start his first preseason game. He looks bigger and more confident with the puck.

Just got an assist now.

Edit: another one.

Brendan Ross ‏@RossyYoungblood
Sarnia scores.Again, it's Reid Boucher on a sick feed from Galchenyuk. Sarault with the 2nd assist. Boucher has all 4 preseason goals for SAR

Galchenyuk assisted on first two goals. Looks absolutely phenomenal on the ice he's ready for a big year.

Boucher (NJD) - Sarault (FA) - Galchenyuk (MTL) was an effective combination on PP. A shooter, passer & 1 who can do both exceptionally well

(Sarault sounding good based on all these tweets. Really hope the rumor is true.)

The prevalent thought after Bergevin signed Brandon Prust was Prust would play on a line with Galchenyuk and Collberg.Giving the Habs a line bearing a resemblance to the old Jean Beliveau line with John Ferguson and Yvan Cournoyer. Now if the Galchenyuk line can produce the wins and the humbling effect the 60's line did then the Habs have certainly taken quantum leaps toward their next Stanley Cup dominance.

Go back a page or two in this thread, apparently we invited him to our rookie camp.

Highlights from the 1st period of today's game. Gally looking ridiculously talented:

Why no camp, all the players at the rookie camp are going to play AHL/ECHL or in Junior/NCAA/Europe

That's true. My bad. I have no idea how I forgot that.

I go sit in corner and feel shame.

The team tried to trade up to the 20's...but it wasn't for Matteau. .
