I've heard people say that the Blues won't offer Andronov an NHL contract (AHL deal only) because they already have 49 players signed to NHL contracts out of a maximum of 50, and they're looking to save that last contract for a LD to play with Pietrangelo.

Of the 49 contracts they have signed, however, Binnington's contract and Rattie's contract are both subject to the Entry Level Slide rule, and if I'm thinking right, that means that those contracts won't count against the 50 contract maximum this year as long as those players return to junior, which they probably will.

So, for all practical purposes, the Blues have just 47/50 NHL contracts signed now, and have no more RFA's to sign... so they don't have to offer Andronov just an AHL contract. They can give him a two-way entry-level deal and let him take a shot at making the bottom six forwards in camp (possibly meshing with Grachev?) before they assign him to AwesomeTown.

As long as he's aware that he's still probably going to end up in Peoria, and is OK with that, I would think that signing Andronov would be a no-brainer if he wants to give the North American game a shot.

If Andronov and Grachev do develop some chemistry, that's a potentially sick AHL combo to flank a center like McRae, or possibly even Sonne, who's a good enough skater to keep up with the Russians and has some playmaking ability.
I'm very excited with the notion of having both Wannstrom and Andronov in Peoria. Andronov could be the biggest pickup of the year. He has been seasoned in arguably the best league outside of the nhl in a checking role. He could be a good upside depth signing on the Peoria shuttle, rather than just a body. Hopefully if he can play, the Blues will give him at least a cup of coffee unlike the Lemtyugov mistake. Thanks for the contract update. I was unaware of how the junior contracts work.

Canada wins the Russia/Canada Challenge series in an overtime playoff, after tying the series 2 games to 2 with a 4-2 win. Rattie scored 2 goals standing right in front of the net and goalie and popping in rebounds. He made a perfect snap feed to Huberdeau for the 4th goal and sealer, while standing right in front of the net. He played a very impressive game, as he did in the 2nd game (as well). His skates had a LOT of jump. He went to the net with power, and withstood hitting well. He held his ground in front. He has great offensive sense, timing, offensive positioning. He is fun to watch.

I am VERY happy that The Blues haven't traded him off to add a veteran defenceman. After he adds a goodly smount of strength and bulk, he will be a special player in The NHL.

Here's the Globe and Mail story on Rattie's heroics.

The overtime period was set up by some clutch scoring by Portland Winterhawks forward Ty Rattie, who scored two power-play goals less than three minutes apart in the second period to help Canada earn a 4-2 regulation win.

Take a look at THIS THREAD for the Eastern-centric view of Rattie's performance in the tournament.

Apparently, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mark Schiefele are gods among men, and Rattie was "barely noticeable" despite scoring three goals in four games (including the game-winning goal in yesterday's game) and setting up the goal in the gimmick OT that gave Canada the "win" in the series.

Petteri Lindbohm's getting rave reviews for his play in Jokerit pre-season games so far. Assistant coach Tomek Valtonen has even said they don't need to sign another defenseman with him around.

Very good to hear. Thanks for the update. Any updates on him or Eronen throughout the season would be greatly appreciated.

Very good to hear, indeed. Please keep us informed on his progress, and that of Teemu Eronen and Jani Hakanpää, if you would.

Reports from Winterhawk training camp is that Rattie put on 10 lbs. over the summer. He's still a bit slender, but it's a start.

Nice little slapper by Eronen from the top of the faceoff circle there... the more I see and hear about this guy, the more I like him.

Awesome... and I love the Portland Rosebuds avatar, too.

I had season tix for the Hawks back in the late 80's, when Troy Mick and Dennis Holland were tearing it up, when Byron Dafoe vs. Olaf Kolzig was a great goaltending battle, and when Ken Hitchcock was coaching Kamloops. Loved going to the games then.

Jokerit - Frölunda, European Trophy, 7-1 after two periods, Eronen scored the first two goals for Jokerit(probably a first in his career).

Dmitri Jaskin has 2 goals and 1 assist in his first 2 preseason games for Moncton of the QMJHL, hopefully he carries this throughout the season and gets acclimated to NA hockey before turning pro. He has been playing with another Blues prospect Yannick Veilleux.
