John Madden retires, joins Canadiens' scouting staff

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=404510

I know it has been mentioned in a thread that I saw, but I felt that Mad Dog deserved his own thread on here. Obviously from where I derived my user name, Madden was one of my favorite players when he came up. He was simply the most intense, driven player on either team any given night. Whatever you asked of him he would do. And whether he had just taken a stick or a puck to the face, he'd put on a visor or get stitched up and be right back out as soon as possible.

I have many great memories of Mad Dog as a Devil, but this one is my favorite.

This picture that I have in my office of him after his 2nd Stanley Cup win defines the passion, energy, toughness and will to win in one simple picture. I'll never forget that scar he got in Game 5 (I believe), it just goes to show you the drive that he had as a player to win. It's what made him the warrior he was throughout his NHL career.

Good luck in your new gig, Mad Dog. You'll always be a Devil first and foremost.

For a guy who's college coach told him he probably didn't have a career in the NHL, not too shabby. Thanks for the memories Johnny cakes.

I love that this deserves its own thread even though Madden is long gone from here.

All the best as always, Johnny.

He was always my favorite Devil growing up and I will never forget his role in 2000 and especially 2003. he was also a true warrior this past playoffs against us for Florida.

I wish him all the best.

Love Mad Dog although I'm a bit curious why he chose the Habs (not saying I figured he'd work for NJ but figured it would be a team he played for)

Posted these vids on the main board thread as well, but was always great to see Maddog play and tear up the PK with Pando with his speed and shot

and who could forget the hattrick against the Rangers in the playoff series sweep

Habs GM Marc Bergevin was with Chicago in 2010, so maybe he struck up a friendship with Madden there?

Can't wait to see his name up in the rafters.

Surely you didn't think I was serious.

One of the best defensive forwards of this generation. Felt bad when he collided with his teammate when we played the Panthers in game 7 this year. He was right back out there like always after being busted up. He almost won the series for Florida in the first overtime too.

Really sad when he left cause he was one of those players I thought should retire as a Devil. Especially since Lou said when he left we need to give younger players a chance like Carpenter leaving gave Madden his chance, and to bring in players like Leblond, and Pelley who spent more games as healthy scratches than anything. And Pikkawhoever who lasted about 3 months in the NHL. Let's also not forget he was a UFA in 04, and came back to us after testing the market.

One of our only players who showed up against the Rangers in the 08 playoffs too. So many memories. Luckily he got to win another Cup after departing with us. Good luck Mad Dog! Always a Devil in my eyes!

Back when we lacked centers when Josefson, and Zajac were out I really wanted Madden back as a 3rd/4th line center last year. People thought I was crazy, but seriously. Madden or Mills for the same price? It turns out that we didn't wind up needing him, but I wanted Lou to give him a chance after his interview in Minnesota a month before Florida got him.
