Zach Smith, 4 years, 1.88m AAV

Ottawa Senators ‏@NHL_Sens

#Sens sign centre Zack Smith to a four-year contract extension: http://ottsens.com/REQI8V

Ottawa Senators ‏@NHL_Sens

The four-year contract extension for #Sens centre Zack Smith (commencing in 2013-14) will have an AAV of $1,887,500.

p.s. Love the fact that Ottawa is managing to break their own signings.

We will find out soon - they usual release that a few minutes after the original announcement. They this year they have loved to also release a picture of the event.

Hopefully it's cheap.

I've seen half a season of good play from him.

I guess I'm a hypocrite if I like the Turris deal too.

Good! I can't wait to see what he's capable of after a full summer of rest. I hope he can keep up the pace he had in the first half of last season.

Good job, Murray. Hoping it's in the ~$2M range. I think he's going to be a great third line centers. Great defensively, can play the PK, finishes his checks, fights and has some untapped offensive potential.

Hoping for 4 years, 8M. I think that's a fair deal for both sides.

It's a good signing, but I would've rather 1.5

Why?

It's a cheap contract long-term. Short-term, we are still below the current cap floor. There's not much downside to this contract.

Love this guy...his play dropped after the head shot in San Jose...Hopefully he'll be back better than ever. He has an above average shot, he's great in the corners and he's one of our toughest players...Good ol Canadian boy.

$1,887,500 x 4 = $7,550,000.

I have a feeling it has a $50k signing bonus.

Not too random to be honest. Could simply be a starting salary of 1.5 with 250k raises every year, 50 k signing bonus.

1.5 -> 1.75 -> 2.0 -> 2.25

He showed that he could be a legitimate game breaker.

With Konopka and Carkner leaving the fold, it's important to retain some sandpaper that can still play a good shift and provide some supplementary offence.
