Wow... Early for a guy who's likely going to take a long time to develop, let alone make the team.

Interesting, though. Good to have him locked up for a while. No chance for him to make the team this year, or even next, I'd guess. Unless we have a surprise on our hands. Most likely the former, though. He has the potential to be a terrific goalie but he's also in no way, shape, or form ready for the NHL.

Kind of a head scratcher for me. Not a bad thing really, just a little odd.

Yeah, I think he's at least a whole ELC removed from the NHL. But Chiarelli knows best I guess.

No harm in signing him now. Subban (and/or his agents) probably wanted to get a 3 year ELC now, rather than gamble that the next CBA will have a 4 or 5 year ELC. This is why we're seeing a bunch of 2012 picks being signed more quickly than in years past. The contract will slide when Subban plays out his junior eligibility anyways.

Do they see a spot being free due to Thomas leaving?

Raask number 1?

Rask
Khudobin
Svedberg in Providence.
Hutchinson if things really get ****ed up.

He won't play this year, the next, and probably more. Pretty much 100% sure... And not because of a lockout.

I would imagine that he is probably 5th on the depth chart

I think this is just preemptive with a new CBA looming.
either that or they may think that Khudobin either wont make the backup grade or will split after this year via UFA. But overall its not a bad thing nor is it a good thing.

I know that Trouba won't be signing because he is in college and one of their restrictions is that he not have a contract with a professional team.

Skjei, Jankowski, Schmaltz, and Matheson are also going the NCAA route

IMO it was kind of dumb to sign him this early. They could have still got compensation out of him if they didn't sign him, and he ended up busting.

Unless i'm mistaken, the team actually have to makes a contract offer and the player have to turn it down for any compensation to be acquired.

Wouldn't a 4-5 year elc be more of a reason to wait?

Certainly not from the player's perspective when ELCs have a strict cap on how much they can pay out and rely heavily on bonuses being achieved.

Do you think Taylor Hall would've preferred making a base of $900,000 with the chance to hit $3.75MM if he plays really well for 5 years -- or that for 3 years followed by a long term $6MM per year deal?

Of course this assumes that ELCs generally stay the same under the new CBA.

True that Subban would've every reason to sign ASAP, but not the Bruins. They have his rights so it's not like he has any leverage in the situation. As a matter of fact, it's pretty much the same thing for the 2012 1st rounders who signed this off-season who aren't projected to make the big show soon. I just don't understand why GM's are handing out the ELC's, goodwill maybe?

How long do teams have to sign their newly drafted players to ELCs? Why is this considered early? He is not ready for the NHL but if they wouldn't have signed him, wouldn't they lose him?

OK- 1 more time- Subban's ELC doesn't count this yr b/c he's in the OHL. But, if he plays in AHL next yr that will toll 1st of 3-yr ELC

Early birthday, he can play in the AHL next year.
