Extend Greening

Does anyone else want to see Greening extended. His current contract ends in 2014 and he will be a ufa. I think he has prooved himself to be a valuable player who could be a main stay in the bottom 6 with his combination of grit and decent numbers he also has prooved he can play top 6 if needed. If Snith is here till 2017 why not lock up Greening till 2017 as well

If you lock everyone up for four years, what happens to your prospects? There is turn over each season, theoretically only a few spots, but you still need to leave some room for roll off.

If he's UFA eligible in July 2014 then I don't believe we can negotiate an extension for him until July 1, 2013 (that is, under the current CBA).

Correct me if I'm wrong.

We have players like Daugavins Condra Job Latendresse that could lose spots to prospects

Correct me if I'm wrong.
You are correct.

Players can only be extended on July 1st of the year prior to the end of their contract.

We have representatives negotiating the new CBA. They need to lobby to change the rules.

If there's one thing I've learned from our past mistakes, it's that it never hurts to lock up all of your pretty ok players at once to multi-million long-term deals.

No, we are not allowed to re-sign Colin Greening until July 1st, 2013.

If they changed that rule in the CBA, that would be ridiculous. "Hey Erik, I know we just negotiated a 6 year deal with you, but how about adding on 4 years to that".

I don't really want too many guys locked in at mid to long term. Our extension to Smith keeps him here til he's 29 - just at the end of his offensive prime.

Greening is two years older than Smith and is signed on an extra season. We'd be keeping Greening around til he's 32 if we lock him up to a four year deal, and because he's about to hit UFA and has shown he can be used as a top-6 fill-in (almost hit 40 points this year), he'll be more expensive.

number 3 and 4 should be reverse. I don't think you want to get marry after you had a nice long life, it should be before then you will have a nice long life

I believe it only works for prime time scorers, star players...

That's #9 on mine

I'm still young enough, but that may make it higher up on my list in the maybe not so distant future.

Players tend to put up the most points during their mid twenties (their prime offensive years). At 29, Smith is no longer really in his offensive prime.

I'm not sure how much it affects different players (eg controlling for style of play, talent, and position). The only statistical analysis I've seen lumped all players together.

We can't extend him and Condra has, against my expectations, turned into a more valuable player.

I think Greening will not be with Ottawa after 2014

These 3,4, 5 year contracts Murray is giving out are not long at all considering most of these guys are under 25 years.

Extend Greening is a big signing, but I put an extention to Michalek and Spezza ahead of him - would like to see #19 and #9 extended by 3 years.

Can't wait to sign Corey Perry next summer, our forwards are gonna be STACKED!

I don't think we could afford to lock up Greening, regardless of the fact that we can't. There's too many potentially skilled prospects coming up to guarantee him a spot, and I question his effectiveness if placed on the 3rd line or even 4th. For a big guy he doesn't throw his weight around all that much. Damn fast for a big guy though.
