OK, now you're getting at what I was interested in. If Guptill is indeed even better than Smith 1v1 and with his puck skills then we have a really exciting prospect. I don't think there's much doubt Guptill will be better down low and in a cycle, for that reason I'd agree that he's a safer prospect. R. Smith is going to have to be a top-6 player most likely. Which I think he's capable of doing.
One last thought, although I'm not directly comparing the 2 players -- Benn was also described as a one-trick goal-scoring pony and a guy who mainly seemed to be just good at finding the soft spots in defenses. Those are some of the biggest indicators for future success IMO.
