NHLDevilsPR @NHLDevilsPR

The Devils have signed defensemen Reece Scarlett and Damon Severson to entry-level contracts.

The only thing I'm afraid of with all the defensive prospects is that we'd be more willing to let Andy Greene walk, and maybe even Fayne, and we'd have a very immature defense in the next few years.

Scarlett and Severson are a few seasons away-they will have to prove themselves in Albany first.

Just to reiterate what Devils Dominion said, Scarlett/Severson are probably a few years away from being in the NHL roster conversation. Severson in particular has two more years of junior eligibility. Eric Gelinas was drafted in 2009 and probably won't be a full time NHLer until 2013+ which is more typical for non-bluechip D prospects.

Oh yeah I didn't mean anytime soon. Sal will probably be retired, Tallinder will definitely be gone, Zidlicky will be gone, hopefully Greene, and Fayne are still here. Larsson will still be here. Volchenkov with his clause who the hell knows. I'm hoping Andy Greene can be the veteran guy. I'd like to keep him, and he wants to be with us cause he came back as a UFA last year.

Nice little write up:

Devils sign pair of recent draft picks

Quote:
"Personally, I felt I really developed as an offensive defenseman," Scarlett said. "After the draft I really wanted to prove to everyone that I should have gotten a lot higher than I did, so I really took that to heart and went out there and felt more comfortable with myself and my ability. I knew that if I step up in the play that I have the skating skill to get back, so I jumped into play a lot more often."

Scarlett, a native of Edmonton, is listed at 6-foot-1 and 168 pounds, but he said he's working on raising that second number.

Quote:
Both players were grateful to have Devils assistant coach Scott Stevens as a mentor at development camp this summer.

"His number [4] hangs in the rafters at the rink [in New Jersey], and that's the guy you want to be listening to when he says something," Severson said. "So I definitely tried to take as much as I could from him. He's just given me everything I need so that I can make myself better. He wants me here and he'll help me as much as he can."

This is probably more Lou wanting to get these guys in under the current CBA then anything else at all considering how far away they are from actually playing in the NHL...

I can't ever look that far ahead, I'm glad it's not my job I'll tell you that.

I believe Lou has a good read how the AHL/CHL agreement may look during the lockout and he doesn't want to miss out on possible development halfway through this season.

Haha I'm not objecting to these contracts at all. Just the observation of all the D men in the system. Not even these guys, but the guys a little bit older like Gelinas, and Urbom, and even Merrill who will probably turn pro in 2013. Gelinas may be able to be a good replacement for Zidlicky next year.

He needs to get to 185lbs or higher to be NHL ready with his frame.

I think we should throw Reese Peanut Butter Cups on the ice whenever he scores a goal.

Agreed, this has nothing to do with next season, and I don't think it significantly affects the thought process on what to do with our veteran defencemen like Greene and Tallinder. It doesn't make them expendable yet.

Lou just wants to get these two guys under contract now because he believes they will be NHL players down the line, and he wants their ELCs to be under this CBA. Perhaps he knows something about what the new ELCs are going to look like, and prefers this one.

I like both of these players, I think they will be successful as Devils in the future, and I'm happy to see them signed.

I will volunteer to eat pizza and drink beer with him, if necessary.

I get little chills thinking about Stevens talking to all these young guys. Scarlett also sounds like a real good kid. If he's training hard enough, I think he could still be strong enough with his frame to compete. You can be a lanky guy and still have the muscle power to go against bigger-sized players.

I'm excited about both of these guys. Really solid picks.

Scarlett needs to start downing the raw eggs, Rocky Balboa-style.

If you rub your food against a piece of paper and the paper turns clear, it's your window to weight gain.

TG has a nice quote from Lou about these guys:

Quote:
Lamoriello said the decision to sign defensemen Damon Severson (2012 second-round pick) and Reece Scarlett (2011 sixth-round pick) now was not impacted by the CBA expiring in nine days and potential changes to entry-level contract guidelines in the new CBA. (Severson and Scarlett signed standard three-year entry level deals. The NHL has proposed pushing the entry-level standard from three years to five years.)

“We made a decision during the summer camp that we were going to try to sign both of them because they’re top prospects,” Lamoriello said.
I guess they are two of the "A prospects" he was talking about during the rookie camp.
