Anyone who thought he was coming was fooling themselves. He's nearing the end of his career and he's gonna sign with a team that finished last in the East?
He was either going to stick around in Phoenix or sign to a team that had a chance to get him a cup.
35 years old, hard years in the NHL, looking for his retirement contract,
at lease 5 mil per and he is looking for 3-5 years. Yes he has been a good player but his best years are in the past.
habs will be a real contender in about 2-3 years not before by then Doan would be nearly finished as a force on the ice.
This isn't realy an update on Doan, we kind of knew he had a deal on the table with the Coyotes and was waiting for Jamieson to secure the money to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix. At least Jamieson found the resources to keep his team in Arizona, so fans in the desert must be happy about that.
On Doan, I didn't really want the Habs to take him on, at the rumored contract he was asking for. A 1-2 year deal would have sufficed and I wouldn't have minded a $6-7 million per year type deal, if it was short term. 4 years is hefty and no team should touch that.

He would have been a nice player to have this year and maybe next but his contract would have been an albatross by year 3 and 4 as he would have surely wanted a 4 year deal to move away from Phoenix.
It will make a whole lot more sense to get a player like Doan in 2-4 years, when the team is a contender and missing a guy with experience, leadership and grit to get them as far as possible in the post-season. Of course, it won't be him since he'll be too old by then.
