If the cap stays around where it's at now, I think it's a good deal.

Not just you. 4 years is too long and $4.5 per is too much. 3yr/$10.5 max would have been ideal.

I think it's a good deal for the Bruins. Marchand is a total ******, but he has a HUGE positive impact on games. He's very fast, very strong/physical for a little guy, skilled and dangerous offensively, very good defensively, and a total pest. Last year he was 5th on the team in points and 2nd on the team in goals, during their cup run (2011 playoffs) he was 3rd on the team in points and 2nd on the team in goals, and he brings so much more to the table than just scoring. He's absolutely one of the Bruins' best 5 on 5 players, and he's not bad on both the PP and PK either. He's also just 24 years old, and he's played only 2 full seasons in the NHL, so he could still get better. I don't see how anyone can really think this is overpayment.

Here's the thread from when he signed for $2.5m last summer.

Overall, from his perspective, it's 6 years/$3.83m, which is a wicked deal for what he brings.

I would say he's even a better PKer than Bergeron, minus the faceoff ability.

I wasn't exactly clear, diving in itself isn't an intangible, but his competitive spirit is and he can play hockey to boot, instead of being just a pest. Teams need guys like him.¸

Aw come on, most Bruins fans would love PK on their team and most Habs fans would feel the same about Marchand.

Seems a little high for me. I had him pegged at 3.5. Good for Brad though.

Ah, l got confused, I meant I think all but one year where UFA years. I was wrong either way.

Did some more reading, as it stands right now its a 27 or 7 to UFA. He'll be 25 when the contract kicks in. It goes for 4 years, so as the UFA eligibility stands right now, his new contract pays for 2 years of UFA eligibility.

Really happy for both parties on this signing.

He was given 2.5 last year and this year to prove himself. In my mind he did and now they are giving him 4.5 over the next four.

Very similar to what they did with Krejci. They gave him 3.75 when the Kessel and Lucic signings were going on and and asked him to prove it and earn a substantial raise afterwards. He did and now has a great contract.

The pattern seems to be a second contract that is about $500,000 lower than what we all expect and then the third contract being about $500,000 more than we thought.

If you look at it that way, I expect Lucic to resign around 4.0 million and Seguin to sign in around the 5.25 range.

Slight overpayment IMO coming from a big Marchand fan. That contract doesn't take effect until after next season though so we'll have to wait and see before judging. I'm also more concerned with what the salary cap is going to be at that point with some of the news I've been hearing of CBA talks than what Marchand brings to the table. Still happy to see him signed for 5 more years in Boston though.

It's obviously not a great deal from the Bruins perspective, but its not bad either. I think its a slight overpayment, but not enough for it to really matter.

He basically got UFA market value, without including that one random team that always ridiculously overpays. 25 other teams would be happy with offering Marchand 4.5 as a UFA. I'm sure 2-3 teams wouldnt want him for the price, and the other 1-2 would give him 5.5 or some stupid number like that.

Either way... Meh deal
