Good signing for a solid 3rd line guy with some toughness and can play the pk.

If they agreed to pay a player a certain amount then they should have to honor that.

If your boss came up to you and was like: "Yeah you know how we signed a contract saying I'd pay you X? well I'm too poor so you are only getting Y." I'm pretty sure you wouldn't agree to that.
The rollback is gone as per the NHL's most recent offer

Yeah, and wanted to increase escrow to compensate.

Just another form of taking money out of the player's contract.

Smith has lots of good qualities to him that are beyond some of the regulars you see on other teams 3rd lines around the league.

And he is under 25. Signed cheap and has a nice term, another good job by the old man. Kinda of sad murray might not be around (retirement not death) if this team hits its potential.

Tim Murray has had his prints all over this team since 2008. There isn't much to worry about.

True but B.murray has never won a cup in any capacity, would be nice if the old guy was around when this team wins a cup.

Of course. If he's alive, he'll get a ring. Unless the regime is overhauled.

Four years is just much too long for this sort of player.

Escrow is given back to the players, rollbacks are not. The extent of how much depends on the health of the League at the end of the year.
For the players to get all their escrow back in the most recent proposal the League would need to grow at 10% that year, which is obviously not going to happen... I can sympathise with the players who aren't too happy about this.
Escrow still happens right now, and it's understandable that the players are not happy about losing some money, but it's still better than a straight up rollback. Escrow is a way to guarantee that the money spent on players is an accordance to the 57% they are supposed to get, it's not some simple cash grab.

The real problem is that the PA has refused to negotiate around that, acting as if it was no better than a rollback. The players have once again become the problem...

Smith is a bigger part of this team than people realize. He covers a lot of bases. His shot gives him a chance to score 15-20 goals in any given season, not to mention his physicality, agitating, fighting, and defensive ability. We're lucky to have him in our bottom-six.

Tough guys that can play are hard to come by. We tend to forget that because we've had Neil for so long.

Smith is an excellent 3rd line center, our scoring lines are going to be set for a few years. Spez on the 1st, Turris on the 2nd, and Smith on the 3rd, just need to find some complimentary scoring wingers for them.

Murray's done a pretty nice job this summer. Locking up the centre position for a few years is great work. If any of the prospects are good enough to knock these guys off then that is a great problem to have.

Im in love with the idea that Neil and Smith will be our third line for next 4 years. Sadly my best example of what I expect to see is for Mighty Ducks 2, the bash brothers.

One thing you guys have overlooked is the emotional edge our players gain from having a guy in the locker room they can call "Smitty."

We should start another petition and tell the players we are going to compensate and "help them" with our average 40 000$ per year, so we could have a NHL season... That should give them a nice dose of humility

I play on a team with two Smitty's. I can vouch for this.

They actually both share the same exact name.

The complaining on the main board was bizarre. We paid Kelly and Neil $2M a piece when the cap was lower. Zach Smith has already proven to be their hybrid lovechild. How can there be anything wrong with $1.88M for him?
