The problem is, Bouchard takes himself off the puck anyway... which already evens it out.

Cullen might get the puck but he'd immediately lose it while sliding feet first into the boards.

That's pretty much the joke I was going to make.

It's hard to retain the puck when you're flat on your butt.

I think Cullen finds his way into a lot of unwarranted hate on this forum, specifically. Ya, he's not the #2 center that this team has been needing. But that should have been known before he even put on a Wild sweater. $3.5m isn't the greatest of cap hits for him either, but it's not like it's hampered this team or makes him monumentally overpaid. Keep in mind this is a guy who's logged pretty large minutes for this team in any and all situations and has stayed on the ice very well for his age (78 & 73 game seasons). In the two seasons he's been here he's been productive when he's the secondary player that he should be expected to be (i.e. early in the year). I don't think it's much of a coincidence that his scoring production falls off the map when he's been pressed into higher expectation - sort of roles when the guys who were supposed to be in those spot went down with injury.

With that said, I do believe Bouchard should play over him if he's healthy and ready to go. And that's the issue with Bouchard. We (or the team) really don't know if he's truly ready to play.

It's more that he's always the go-to guy in the top six. Sorry, but when you disappear down the stretch in terms of production in back-to-back years, you deserve some of that. I'd get down on Clutter too but he's making half the money and at least plays that physical pest game.

The other bit is that he really doesn't generate any offense to speak of with his linemates, which again drags down the top six. Even Brodziak managed to do a little more by aggressively forechecking. Cullen just doesn't bring much to the table outside of a little bit of forechecking pressure on the LW (basically rushing the D's breakout pass).

I also think part of it is that as fans we're bored of him. He brings little to the table. Kind of like when the Vikings dumped McNabb and went to Ponder last year...yeah maybe Ponder wasn't an improvement, but at that point it's low risk, high reward to get someone else in. Why bother with a 15g/30pt guy in the top six compared to maybe a young kid with upside, a different grinder who could shine in a top six role, or even a waiver wire pick up?

Not to go too far off topic here... but did you actually pay attention last season? McNabb couldn't get a first down! 3 and out over and over and over... Ponder WAS an improvement, but that's more a statement on just how bad McNabb really was.
