Two players who likely go number 3 and 4 in next year's draft. Who do you like and why?
Personally, I think Barkov has very, very good offensive potential. I haven't seen as much of him as I have of Monahan, being from Ottawa, but from what I've seen, he looks like he'll be a legit producer.
IMO, Monahan is a Jonathan Toews 2.0, i think he shows the most leadership out of the '13 draft class and is great on his skates. i'd take him over barkov any day. I can see Monahan being a captain in the NHL for quite awhile.
I've only seen Monahan twice (canada/russia past summer), and while I wasn't blown away by any part of his game, he always knew where to be in the offensive zone, and was always getting quality scoring chances.
As for Barkov, my only viewings of him were in tv last WJC, and from what I saw he seemed to have all the tools to become a great player. For a 95 he seemed to be very physically mature, much like Mackinnon.

Seems way too early to say they likely go 3 and 4. With that being said, I've been very, very impressed by what I've seen of Monahan, he seems like a stellar player. Barkov I haven't seen much of, so I'll reserve my judgement there.

Just to be very, very safe maybe you shouldn't be posting here until after the draft. Don't risk your credibility because without that you're a nobody.
2 totally different players. Monahan plays with intensity and grit mostly. Barkov plays with confidence and never seems to be under pressure. Monahan has good offensive instincts, barkov has insane stickhandling skills with and without the puck. Both are strong two way players. Monahan is better skater, Barkov is stronger. Barkovs game is based on his high hockeyIQ,positioning and smarts, monahans game is based on tight forecheck and high tempo. It's like choosing Datsyuk from Toews. Teams who will draft them will be set for a while in center position. Love to see them at WJC against each other.
What I would do if I were an NHL GM holding the number 3 pick, knowing there's no possible way of moving up in the draft, I'd be looking to acquire the number 4 pick and then pick both Monahan and Barkov. I'd dish off 2 roster players plus a b level prospect to get that deal done. But if the price is any higher than that, then I'm picking Monahan.
Barkov. He's a mix between Igor "The Professor" Larionov and Jari Kurri with way bigger frame, go figure it out.
EDIT: Barkov sits at 190cm/6'3 91kg/200lbs

Not sure what you're ripping on me for, but if it's for not ranking Barkov, well, I don't like to give an opinion on a player unless I've actually seen him myself a few times, otherwise I'm just parroting online scouting reports. If it's the "seems way too early to say they likely go 3 and 4," well, that's simply true. It's very, very common to have guys who are ranked top 3 a year before the draft end up going around 10th, or guys who are ranked around 10th a year before the draft going top 3. I would in fact bet my life savings that Barkov and Monahan do NOT go 3 and 4 in next year's draft, simply because it's way too early to be making statements like that.
I've barely watched Barkov but by the sounds of it he's probably undeniably a better physical talent than Monahan is. Monahan can do a bit of everything and he's got a great mind for the game all over the ice.
He definitely is huge. He's standing beside Ville Nieminen in that photo, and Nieminen is listed at 6'1", 220 lbs on both NHL.com and espn.com (I'm actually surprised by that listing, I thought of him as being a bit smaller when he was in the NHL, but he's obviously a decent sized guy). Barkov was likely 16 when that photo was taken, too, he's certainly quite the beast physically.

I think Nieminen was 6'1" 200lbs in his best years. He's still playing though, so he should be in playing shape in that picture.
Barkov looks to have a really good frame to build some muscle on. An athletic 6'3" 220+ with skills and hockey IQ would be a nice package for sure.
Both players would look great in Oilers silk if we can get in the top 5 picks. Get er done, oilers top lines would look like this.

I've been more excited for Barkov than anyone else in 2013, except maybe Seth Jones because he's a Winter Hawk. Barkov is big, athletic, freaky talented, and smart. Oh, and young, he's going to mature into a big time player in my opinion, and if I were an NHL GM, he'd be the guy I'd be trading up for.
Purely statistically speaking, these high end prospects in this draft are incredible. Most of these kids already had better numbers than the first rounders in the 2012 draft.

Having seen Monahan play quite a bit over the past two years, I'm not sure your description of his game matches with mine. In particular, I would say Monahan relies more on hockey sense and smarts than a high tempo. If anything, my concern is that Monahan does NOT play at a high tempo.
I haven't seen Barkov play, but I'd be curious to see his stickhandling skills without the puck.

Over in the Sens forum we get to watch him a ton, and he mostly resembles Jonathan Toews with his demeanor play.
I can see the Toews comparison with Monahan, but I also see some Jordan Staal. I think his overall skating will have to continue to develop to get to the Toews level in terms of offensive impact.
