What? It's an extra year, he's an arguably better player and it's only 250k. Get real.

Reading this thread it's pretty amazing to see the massive difference in reaction between this deal and Halls. This signing is being called "the best signing of the summer" but Halls deal which is 7 years instead of six and only 250k more was called an overpay and too early. Like I said you can argue either way about who's better.
I'd wager a guess that the difference in reactions is due to the initial shock

good catch, and I should have noted which one of those guys were in the same boat (I think it's most of them)....but that should make his deal cheaper, not more expensive, no?

Most around here pulverized Skinner's contract too. I mean, not that it's entirely uncommon for HF to trash contacts. I think all three deals are great for their respective clubs in regards to the top 2010 forward group. It should also be noted that those deals don't kick in until after the next season of hockey is played. Still much to be written about all three players and their upside.

Homers going to homer, I suppose.

It seems a little bit of an overpay, but the Bruins seem to love him and he shown that he can become a terrific player. I hate the Bruins, but love Seguin. This is a great deal for Seguin. I think the Bruins should have paid him a bit less, though. 5.75 million does seem a bit high. It really makes me happy about the steal we received when we signed Pacioretty!

Good for both sides I guess, Boston could've gone shorter term lower cap hit, but with the uncertain CBA looming, it makes sense to lock him up longer just like Hall/Eberle.

I continue to be amazed at the number of young players locking themselves in at what should eventually be bargain prices...

I just realized I had this picture, made when someone made a typo of his name.

He said in a news report that he wanted to start a life here.. Guess this is the start of it!

Absolutely love the deal. Less than Hall for the same amount of years. Depending on the CBA, this could be robbery. Chiarelli for President! He's done great his whole career here, terrific offseason.

It should be more expensive.

It eats up years 4-9. Not years 3-8. More prime years as well as eats up an extra UFA year.

We can make a bet now, and I will literally, literally pay pal you $100.00 in a bet that Hall will outproduce Skinner and be the vastly more impactful, better all around player by a significant (nice way of saying "massive" or "huge") margin when the two are compared, even just this upcoming season *fingers crossed there is one*. People will see what kind of a beast Hall will turn into over the next 1-2 years. This conversation will be completely absurd 3 years from now. Yes the gap is that large, maybe not between Seguin and Hall, but for Hall and Skinner definitely. I also expect Hall to be a better point producer and overall player than Seguin in the near future as well.

Hall gets signed for 7 years, 250k more on the cap hit and people blast it on these boards.

Seguin gets virtually same deal, one year less and people are saying "steal" and "great deal" "fantastic deal", "Chiarelli one of the best in the league.."... it's laughable actually. The Eastern bias and lack of knowledge on these boards are hilarious.

Hall got 7 years. 1 years into UFA, that's why it was 250k more expensive.

Congrats BOS; don't see any downside on this one really

It must be nice being a fan of a large market team when it comes to contract negotiations. Every time the Preds are trying to work with a highly touted RFA/UFA, I assume the worst.

Wow, this is an amazing deal and the Hall deal is horrible? Granted, Hall has had injuries which makes him more of a risk, but Hall's PPG thus far in his career is .75 and Seguin's is .57.

Boston's off-season is quite impressive. They worked very hard at getting fair deals/good deals for their players. Watch out NHL. Boston means business.

He's progressing as expected and what he's getting is super fair. It seems players get a ton of money now as RFAs than in the distant past.

So the oilers sign Hall for 7 years with a cap hit of 6.5 and they get roasted. Bruins signed Seguin for 6 years at 5.75 and it is a steal of a deal

someone needs to explain to me the difference

Actually the caphit for Hall is 6.0, .25 higher, with an extra year. But I agree, doesn't make any sense.

If I am not mistaken he gave up one less year of free agency than Hall. That is the difference right there so basically they are the same contract.
And no he is not

Yeah, I'm sure you believe that. That's why I added the "Homers going to homer" comment.

It's quite simple. For each of their respective careers thus far:

Hall - .75 PPG, 18 minutes a game (average)
Skinner - .73 PPG, 17 minutes a game (average)
Seguin - .55 PPG, 14 minutes a game (average)

Tell me how one is "clearly" better than the other at the moment, because I'd love to see the justification.

As for their careers going forward, I'm not going to attempt to predict the future, especially when two out of the three players have had injury-plagued seasons this early in their careers. I will say that, theoretically, this upcoming season, all 3 will have the best support surrounding them in their careers thus far, with Edmonton getting a RW in Yak and Carolina getting a solid 2nd line center in J. Staal.

Yeah, I don't see how somebody could criticize one deal and not the other.

This is a great deal for Boston.
