Was a tough place to play....they lost their biggest advantage when they had a new stadium built. I predicted it last cycle, that we may not see CR in the WC for a while, the team is pretty average and generally gets through from great results at Saprissa.

Lebanon beat Iran today in WC qualification

Who was saying again that Lebanon had no chance in this group?

they actually have to get points away from home

Japan won today, they are pretty much in the World Cup with one more win. South Korea drew away to Uzbekistan

Jordan-Australia currently playing, still 0:0

Australia now down 1-0 to Jordan. I Don't like their start in group play this round. 2 draws in 2 games so far.

2:0 now

Australia have regressed so much in recent years, they don't have any good youngsters coming through in my opinion. Nothing compared to the 2006-2010 team

Group A
Uzbekistan - South Korea 2:2
Lebanon - Iran 1:0

Uzbekistan only have 1 point from their 2 home games, not good enough. Nice win for Lebanon but they have a lot of away game remaning.

1. South Korea 3 7
2. Iran 3 4
------------------------
3. Qatar 3 4
------------------------
4. Lebanon 4 4
5. Uzbekistan 3 2

Group B
Japan - Iraq 1:0
Jordan - Australia 2:1

Japan cruising to the World Cup, really one more win should do it. Australia continue to struggle with a bad loss in Jordan

1. Japan 4 10
2. Jordan 3 4
--------------------------
3. Australia 3 2
--------------------------
4. Iraq 3 2
5. Oman 3 2

Both groups involve one team which will run away with it (Korea & Japan) while the rest is wide open

Would love to see one of Lebanon or Iraq qualify for the finals.

Yea baby!

Big win.

Also, I used the ranking calculator on FIFA.com after the win and it gives Lebanon 314 points, which boosts them from #124 to #102 in the world. FYI, they were #146 just last year. Another win brings them into the top 100. Qualifying for the WC would be unbelievably huge for the country and its people, the team is already getting more attention and hype than ever before.

In the mid-90s Lebanon had a nice run as well and they moved up in FIFA ranking to #90 if I recall correctly after beating teams like Ecuador. Lebanon always had good players but the Federation is as corrupted as ****, never put enough money to prepare the national team.

Roda Antar is certainly the best Lebanese player of all time, he played in the Bundesliga with Hamburg and Freibourg (?) and now plays in China. Would LOVE if he gets MLS attention and come to play in NA.

Yea exactly, agree with everything you said, especially about the corruption holding them back. If you go to Lebanon, you see the love of the game at the grassroots level, just how talented kids playing in the streets are. The talent is there, we're just always needed better development and funding for the programs.

But Lebanon has never made it to this final stage of WC qualifying, so this is a big boost for sure. And Antar also played with FC Koln in the Bundesliga as well from 2007-2009, with teammate Yousef Mohammed. Mohamad is also the best Lebanese defender of all time, the guy was captain of Koln until he left last year to play for UAE club Al-Ahli (probably for money, as they got $ to blow over there). I actually wanted TFC to take a look at bringing him over as a DP, but that was never going to happen.

I remember interest was huge back in 2000 when the Asian Cup was hosted there.

Interest is one thing, but its about sustaining interest and providing results. They didn't get a single win and finished last in the group when hosting that 2000 Asian Cup. Soccer will always undoubtedly be #1 in Lebanon. But the national team has never given the people reason to take them seriously on the world stage. Everyone in Lebanon has their other allegiances (Brazil, Germany, Italy, France are most popular). Having Lebanon beating quality opponents and making it this far provides a huge morale boost for the team and the Lebanese fans. IF they were to qualify for the WC finals, then a country that is torn by sectarian divides would unite and rally around this amazing underdog accomplishment. From there, the program would only get better as kids would now see that the dream of playing in the WC is possible, and funding and attention would increase for the better. It can't be understated how important making the world cup for the first time is for any Soccer-crazy country, especially in the Middle East, where the effects can transcend sport.

Rodriguez just scored a brilliant free kick to put Colombia level with Chile.

EDIT: And Falcao is the greatest. 2-1.

Cavani scores. 1-1.

Ecuador really should have had an penalty some mins before Cavanis goal but the ref gave Benitez a yellow card for diving instead.. brutal call

If there's a footballer dumber than Di Marie, I would to see him. All the skill and talent in the world but an absolute moron.

A minute 30 into the game, kicks a player in the side of the chest resulting in a pk. Thankfully, the Peruvian player botches it completely.
