So last season, Stephane Auger retired from the NHL. A league press release said that he retired "in order to spend more time with his wife and three children."
At the time, it said in the Globe and Mail newspaper: "Auger could not be reached for comment but the fact he was not given a farewell season, as many referees are, also indicates the "retirement" was not his choice."
But Doug Maclean was on TEAM Radio in Vancouver tonight and said that he was just in Europe watching his son play, and he saw Stephane Auger refereeing in the Austrian League!
I guess he didn't "retire" at age 41, and the NHL actually realized what the fans always knew...this guy sucked!
I guess this solves the mystery of whether he was fired (Brian Murphy, the president of the NHL Officials Association, wouldnt say if Auger had no say in his retirement, NHL director of officials Terry Gregson said it was a retirement).
Maybe they decided to move to Europe. Who knows, we don't know the full story do we? I don't suspect refereeing is that high paying of a job to to move half way around the world for.
Why piss on the guy now... He's done in the NHL.. The man probably has a family to support, he's probably got to do what he's got to do..
All i can i say is.. good luck to guy, hope he sees some success in his career and is fulfilled...
So, i dont understand....why would a person retire from the NHL so they can go make less money somewhere else? That makes no sense.
That's exactly the point. Everyone speculated that he was fired due to his reputation as a poor referee, but said he retired. This story supports the "he was fired" idea.

Not a lot. seems like anyone who can skate is refereeing. last year showed that
I'm fairly sure referees get a base salary of at least 6 figures, perhaps over the 200 mark. They also get a credit card with spending money for when they're out working in whatever city the games in.
Also, the NFL is currently displaying with the top-end referees are so important to our sport.
@Korolyuk - Auger was a bias, blatantly corrupt NHL ref, who held personal vendettas against players he didn't like that affected actual NHL games, and has been one of the most inconsistent, awful referees over the past decade.
Auger has a three-week engagement in the EBEL. He acted as an instructor in the referee camp and is supervising the refereeing in EBEL games right now. He is also refereeing a couple EBEL games himself. The worst of the NHL is just good enough for the EBEL.

Cry me a river.
I actually don't keep track of individual refs so don't really know much about him.
Obviously there is no place for obvious bias in games, was just trying to make a funny, because in general I think the refs in the NHL do quite a good job and the complaining about them here is quite a bit over the top and a result of mass produced homer glasses
at least you don't get too much of this in the NHL

Doug MacLean was infamous for disputing every petty little call against the Jackets when he was GM here. I trust him to be objective on referee issues only slightly less than I trust him to competently run a hockey team.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
This post doesn't even mean anything. He was in Europe to watch his son skate. How do we know if some Austrian league just really needed a ref and he was around with NHL experience? He could have subbed in for a game or two just to cover for some missing ref(s). Why bother even bringing this up other than to bash him?

..and i'm a Canuck fan.
Just empathize for 1 second....
Why not piss on him? This is an NHL forum and he was one of the worst ever.

Do you mean in beer leagues or....what exactly? Because you totally lost me with the bolded comment. Auger was THE worst when he was in the NHL.
BTW, you know what "Auger" means in English? It's a tool used to unclog the pipe connected to your ****ter. Fitting if you ask me.
