More directed at the people lamenting about how the 2 sides aren't even talking. Thats why.
The owners are taking a beating in the press right now. If the players make a few small unsubstantial concessions in the proposal it's going to further deteriorate the owners image when they can't accept it. No win situation for them if that is the case.
All sports that go on through CBA negotiations/lockouts always say the same thing, "they'll never be able to recover". Yet they always do recover. There may be a short term loss of the die hard and casual fans but eventually 95% of them come back.
In 2004-2005 the NHL went through a "crippling" season long lockout. The NHL suffered some when they came back but look at them now, you could argue they're are/were stronger then ever.
The fans will come back and the owners/players know this. 95% of the fans who are angry now will get over it when they see their beloved game back on TV.
with the exception that in the United States, hockey has NEVER been ANYWHERE close as popular as MLB, NFL, NBA, etc.
The NHL and NHLPA are meeting at the NHL offices this morning at 10. The NHLPA has a player meeting scheduled for today at 5:30. Another NHLPA player meeting tomorrow. The NHL Board of Governors are meeting tomorrow.
2002 MLB deadline. August 30. It was on a Friday. Fehr was taking the players on strike if there wasn't a new CBA in place.

When do they have to come to an agreement to prevent the start of the season gets postponed? Has a date been set?
On Saturday, a lockout will become official. Training camps will be cancelled and so will preseason. They would probably only have a few weeks after that to get something done to prevent any regular season game losses.

As you may know, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association are currently engaged in the process of negotiating a successor Collective Bargaining Agreement to the current agreement which expires on September 15th, 2012. It is the League's objective to successfully conclude negotiations by between now and that expiration date.

In the event that a new Agreement is not reached prior to the start of the 2012–13 regular season and a work stoppage occurs causing home regular season games to be cancelled and not re-scheduled, Season Subscribers will each have the option of either receiving a refund with interest on a monthly basis or choosing to keep money on account with interest. I'm not sure why fans are hanging on every whisper or tidbit of news regarding when talks will/could be held, or how certain involved are optimistic and there's some hope.
There is no hope right now, it's a 100% guaranteed conclusion that a lockout will happen on the 15th. After the 15th is when people should start paying attention, because sometime after that is when the issue will be forced and real things will start to happen

thats a 100% guaranteed heaping pile of BS. nobody knows what or will happen. you cant seriously expect something like that to fly. is it likely to happen? of course. are the odds probably 95% or better? probably. is it 100%? no. when the players have their meetings tonight you could have a bunch of them say screw it, lets just make a deal...guys dont want to lose more time off of their careers. getting a deal done now or a few months from now only means that players will be losing all that money...imho they arent making a much better deal later than sooner..thats just an opinion though.
I would hope there would be some sense of urgency at this point. Maybe I'm just being optimistic but I think the stigma of another lockout is just too much. For the players they really won't gain much at the end of the day. The owners will eventually get what they want... The players lose salary and time off their career.

no chance, I mean 0.0%. There is absolutely no hope whatsoever for a deal before the 15th, the sooner fans accept this, the better their lives will be
