CBA Issues Preventing Young RFAs from Re-Signing

http://iphone.tsn.ca/mobile/2012/09/...der_090512.mp4

The upshot of this video is Bob McKenzie stating that players such as P.K. Subban, John Carlson, Michael Del Zotto, Evander Kane, Jamie Benn, Dmitry Kulikov, Ryan O'Reilly and Tyler Ennis are still unsigned because of the dragging CBA negotiations. The players are likely seeking deals similar to Jordan Eberle and Jeff Skinner (Long term, good money) or a deal like Matt Duchene's (Maybe lesser money but just 2 years) whereas the teams are driving a hard bargain and offering long-term deals for less money. McKenzkie states that when the NHL and NHLPA get past core monetary issues, one of the main issues certain GMs want pushed (and they showed a pic of Brian Burke!) is a drag on 2nd contracts for young players. So the players are playing a game of chicken, in a sense, passing on large current offers in the off-chance that the CBA doesn't address this issue, but McKenzie also believes some teams have broken off negotiations while waiting for the CBA to be resolved.

This might be old news to some, but given the amount of "Are you surprised Tyler Ennis hasn't signed yet?" "Why is Jamie Benn unsigned?" etc. etc. threads around these boards, I thought it was important to answer these questions. Give it a listen.

Interesting info, but it's also true many key RFA's were signed just before camp last year.

8 Major Unsigned Restricted Free Agents

This situation is due to the imminent lockout the NHL is facing.

I don't think any of the fanbases should worry about them being unsigned given the current CBA situation. These GMs are probably waiting for a new CBA to be signed so they know what they're working with.

"Still, with Mike Green spending more time in the infirmary than Bruce Boudreau in a donut stand"

Top notch reporting

I find it funny that Franson is listed as one of the major eight and Kulikov is an honorable mention

After two unimpressive seasons in Denver, the 21 year-old OíReilly exploded offensively in 2011-12, notching 18 goals and adding 37 assists for 55 points in 81 games. OíReilly represents the future of the Avs, along with Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog and Eric Johnson. Look for the Avalanche to sign OíReilly to a short-term contract similar to Matt Ducheneís contract: a two year pact worth around $3 million/year.

Kulikov as an honorable mention?

O'Reilly struggling in his first two seasons? Yes, how many 18 year old 2nd round draft picks step straight into the NHL and have back to back 26 point seasons while playing strong defensively. Clearly struggling

This guys a joke

McKenzie talked about this a week ago, so I've merged the two threads.

I can't believe he didn't mention Abdelkader. He's one of the very best 4th liners in the bottom half of the Central division at least.

As of right now I think the CBA is also hurting a lot of players that have one year remaining like Getzlaf and Perry. If the salary cap goes down to 60 millions that those players will be paid a bit less then they would if the salary cap went to 70 million like it was projected earlier this year.
