Some big signing bonus payments in 2012-2013 season even if there is a year lock out

Teams that have signing bonuses written in the contracts will have to pay their players even if there was a 1 year lockout. Below are most if not all of the payouts for the 2012-2013 season. $20.54M by Minnesota on 3 players, none of which suited up for them in the 2011-2012 season. Wow.

Can't say I feel bad for Minny. Also didn't realize Myers was making that kind of dough.

Also I didn't know you can get a signing bonus the year after signing a deal? Ehrhoff + Leino were the ones I specifically noticed. Theoretically doesn't a signing bonus mean instant money after signing?

Gotta give credit to the Flames... they are neck deep in NTC's and NMC's like silicone in a strip club but not a single signing bonus listed there.

edit...
I spoke too soon... digging a little further, Calgary has signing bonuses of $92,500 to Baertschi and $92,500 to Brady Lamb (who?) and $80,000 to Joni Ortio (double who?). They have lots of sub $100,000 signing bonus amounts but nothing over that at least that I can see.

ha ha to teams like Minny.

Hemsky's, I can live with. We haven't had full value for him for a couple of years but he's been a good player ona lot od bad teams. he deserves a bonus just for that.

I'm no expert but I believe the bonus is spread out for tax purposes.

You can spread it out. The fact that you can do that is what kneecapped Nashville with Weber. While the maximum salary per year is fixed, there is no limit to the percent the bonus can take up. Thus, $27M ($13M + $1M + $13M) in 1 year (July 1 to July 1) for Weber.
