Good contract for Carlo. Hes got a bomb and can hit with the best when hes on.
Ummm......

Are you thinking of someone else? Carlo can shoot the puck, but it's far from a cannon and if by hitting with the best you mean he trips over the red line and goes on the DL for 3 weeks, then yay hes a Mack truck.

Visibly, and statistically, the Blues have been one of the best puck possession teams in the league for a couple years. He'll probably do well if he plays in a system that allows more free roaming, but he won't be great under any circumstances.

Something Colaiacovo has that the Wings always seem to have as a team is the ability to pull a goal out of nowhere. Colaiacovo has a knack for coming out of nowhere for a clutch goal. Unfortunately, he does this for both teams on the ice no matter what caliber of competition he's facing.

Dude really isn't "trash" at all, he's just a #4/5 puckmoving defenseman who can play the powerplay and cannot play shutdown minutes.

That's an insult to Schneider. More like Mathieu Dandenault 3.11.

Good defenseman not given enough credit. Only reason people hate on him is because he is always hurt.

2 yrs? Did they even bother to make an offer to Roszival? That guy played top 4 mins on a solid defence at least and is healthier. Hamrlik and a few others are still available.

With all their scouts in Europe, could they not have signed a guy like Emelin like Mtl did last season?

Come trade deadline time I'm sure rebuild mode will be more seriously considered. Teams won't benefit from the full season of Iginla/Kiprusoff/JBo, but they will have greater cap flexibility to squeeze them in.

That is not true at all. Dude makes a lot of really dumb defensive mistakes and weird decisions even while not under pressure; and he is possibly the worst player in the NHL at holding the puck in at the offensive blue line. He's not a bad player, but the dislike for him is more due to his other flaws than his injury problems. He's just straight up inconsistent, not just from game to game, but shift to shift. The only inconsistent players of whom fans approve are good goalscorers, and even then, it's touchy.

I'm sure Calgary would've accepted something...

Just like I'm sure whatever it was they wanted, Ken Holland laughed before he hung up.

Healthier? Didn't he just blow out his knee in the playoffs?

You're just drawing straws between these two.

In any event, Detroit is rebuilding anyhow..so meh overall

Hamrlik isn't a UFA. He's a Capital.

That's what a big problem for Colaiacovo was: he played top-four minutes, first-pairing to be exact. He's not a first-pairing defenseman by a fair margin and he's really not a top-four guy. He played a role he really wasn't cut out for in St. Louis. I think that should be different in Detroit, at least that's what Wings fans should hope. The guy isn't a terrible player. He takes a lot of flak for his mistakes and rightfully so, but he's not totally useless as some make him out to be around here. In a role more rightfully suited for him (which should be a bottom-pairing puck-mover who sees PP time on likely the second unit), he could do well.

If it's any place a player can succeed, it's Detroit, and that's been said time and time again. No guarantees it always works however, but it does a lot of the time. Ian White COULD be a good recent example, not that he was really ever bad, just kind of fell a bit upon being traded to Calgary; however, the reason I said "COULD" is because White was paired with Lidstrom and Nick can make any partner better, but we'll see what White can do this year without him. Colaiacovo won't be the beneficiary of being paired with a great partner (likely won't be with Kronwall) so his mistakes might not be as easily covered as they were with Pietrangelo by his side, but he could be the beneficiary of a role more suited for him; less minutes will be good for him. The Blues are a great team and Ken Hitchcock is a great coach, but so are the Wings and Babcock. Both get the best out of their players, so this could be a fine signing.

Really the only guy left the Wings could get at this point. It's no surprise, as they were talking to him for quite a while now, but they must not have been able to get a trade worked out with anyone. Only surprise is that they went for Colaiacovo instead of Rozsival, who I'm sure they could have gotten and who ironically was cheaper and for one year as opposed to Carlo's two. Rozsival is also arguably much better too, but I'm just glad my Hawks got him and our division rival didn't. Not that I hate the Wings, I'm just glad we got Rozsival instead of them.

First of all, both guys played roughly as much last year. Second of all, how is Roszival at 34, that missed more games and got dinged last year, healthier? Lastly, meh player compared to meh player. Nobody wins.

I am glad Colaiacovo is gone. He's not that bad of a player but he's just frustrating to watch. Almost every game there would be a player laying down on the ice behind the play injured and it was always Colaiacovo, every single time. Then he limps off and sits on the bench as if he's just been shot - and he usually comes back fairly quickly but he just constantly gets hurt.

Good god, after watching those hilarious videos, I hope he tries to hit with same rate as Lidström did in his career.

on of HFboards biggest whipping boys. You'll think he's a #7 or #8 defenseman by readin this thread, when he's in fact a #4 (and the contract shows it). He's no Lidstrom, but the only other option for Detroit was to make a trade. Replacing Lidstrom with Colaiacovo is better than replacing Lidstrom with no one.

Maybe Det will have better luck with him, they usually do with x-blues players. He would be a halfway decent 2nd pair d man if he could stay healthy. I thought Det would go for a more defensive minded tough d But maybe Carlo was the only option.
