- Owners may have not wanted to pay his salary but I doubt they care, doubt it is this.
- Armstrong see's that he has no future with the team and likely wouldn't have gotten much, if any, playing time this coming season so he asked Burke to be traded. Burke tried to find a partner, for anything, but nobody was biting. Burke and his morals not wanting to embarrass him by putting him on reentry waivers hoping that somebody picks him up bought him out instead so another team can sign him. This I think is the most likely scenario.

Clearly, the Leafs tried to trade him first. GMs don't just buy players out without trying to move them.

Re-entry waivers are for recalling players making over a certain amount (I think it's $105,000) in the minors. So, I'm not sure this is what you mean.

Did you mean regular waivers to send him down to the minors? He had to clear waivers before he could be bought out. So, clearly, no one wanted him at $3M or he would have been claimed.

Now, let's assume that Burke did keep him and assign him to the minors. That would like be the end of him in the NHL as he would then need to go through re-entry waivers to be brought back to the NHL. Now, at that point, if he is claimed, his cap hit is split between the Leafs and his new team, so the Leafs would have a $1.5M cap hit for a player they no longer had.

Why do you think the most likely scenario is Armstrong asking to be traded rather Burke realizing that there was likely no room for him?

Essentially, Burke's choices were:

* Trade him. Most likely tried and no one was interested.

* Bury him in the minors. This would result him in him likely spending the entire year in the minors, which would be a $0 cap hit for the Leafs. Burke would have the option of recalling him, but that could result in a $1.5M (if claimed) or $3M (if not) cap hit as described above. I could see Burke seeing this as being unfair to Armstrong, since Armstrong either ends up in the minors all year or on whatever team claims him.

* Buy him out. This would result in a $1M cap hit for two years, and Armstrong would become a free agent and be able to make a deal with another team. This was likely seen as the fairest option for Armstrong and is not a huge cap hit.

I think the decision to buy him out makes sense.

The Boston Bruins have locked up forward Tyler Seguin with a new six-year, $34.5 million contract extension. The average annual value of the deal is $5.75 million per season.

The team made the announcement on Tuesday, just four days before the current NHL-NHLPA labour agreement is set to expire. Full Story.

“Very rarely do you see this combination of skill and toughness,” Condors coach and director of hockey operations Matt O’Dette writes of the "Baby" singer. “We share a common Canadian heritage since we both hail from Ontario. I’ve scouted some video of him online skating with my hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and I think he could provide some elusive speed up front for us. Plus, he’s a right-handed shot which we’ve been looking to add. I think if we paired him on a line with (Robby) Dee and (Peter) Boyd we’d be tough to beat.”
Can't believe their coach actually said that

He was mr.everything for the Yotes during their playoff run. Good pickup. Hawks have quite the supply of dmen right now. Not necessarily talented, but just alot of bodies. Hammer will probably be gone.

Good signing. If the players take a haircut with the new CBA it looks even better.

Its official as Colaiacovo joins Wings

With the free-agent frenzy quieting in the face of a pending lockout, it appears one more NHL signing has squeaked in prior to the Sept. 15 expiry of the current collection bargaining agreement.

The Detroit Red Wings, a team that has made no secret of its blue-line needs, have signed unrestricted free agent Carlo Colaiacovo to two-year contract, Andy Strickland of 590 The Fan in St. Louis reported Wednesday night.
So now they have former Leafs Ian White and Carlo on their defense.

Zach Hamill placed on waivers today

I seem to recall this type of conversation when he was first placed on waivers by Boston, but I was just curious, would anyone take a chance on an 8th overall pick, or has he been around long enough to be called a bust?

Again LOL! I had Bruins fans saying he had improved so much he would never be on waivers again.

And no he is not a good option -- just because he was drafted high -- doesn't mean he's any good.

I think he was put on the waivers where it lets him play in the AHL if there is a lockout. I don't think he was put on waivers waivers.
