Whitmore is too good to only have a try-out contract. He finished 15th last year in the AHL in the goal column. I guess that he didn't want to commit to a full year deal with the Icecaps because he hopes to earn a NHL deal quickly.

Per the article I linked above, they talk a bit about Whitmore's situation which I can no longer access due to it being apparently behind a paid subscriper thingy, so I'll have to paraphrase. Basically, it said that Rochester was still interested in bringing Whitmore back, but NHL teams want their prospects to play lots in the AHL so they aren't keen on their affiliates loading up on veteran talent. I'd presume he'll get a camp invite, or sign a deal shortly after the lock-out ends.
The Winnipeg Jets are pleased to announce they have agreed to terms with forward Spencer Machacek on a new NHL contract. As per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has signed defenseman Jonathon Blum to a one-year, two-way contract worth $650,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level with a guarantee of $300,000 for 2012-13.
Quote:
Blum, 23 (1/30/89), played in 33 games with Nashville in 2011-12, recording seven points (3g-4a), and 48 games with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, notching 26 points (4g-22a).
Quote:
A native of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Blum became the first native of the Golden State to be selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft when Nashville selected him 23rd overall in the 2007 Entry Draft.
I'm guessing that Blum was looking for a 1-way and Nashville wanted a 2-way, so they compromised on a 1-way that guaranteed him almost as much as a 1-way deal.

He has to go through waivers to play in the AHL. I don't think Nashville will be taking this risk

Per Elite Prospects, a couple UFAs signed overseas, I have no idea if they have outclauses in the even of a season. Steven Reinprecht has signed with Nurnberg of Germany and Patrick O'Sullivan has signed with HIFK of Finland.
