Ryan Ellis

This kid dominated the OHL and should be poised to have a breakout season soon enough. So what would it take to pry him away from Nashville now that Suter is gone?

Paajarvi+?

They weren't going to sell low if Suter had stayed, and they aren't going to do it, now. It takes special circumstances for that to happen, like with the Turris-Rundblad trade.

Nashville is extremely weak on the LW. Paajarvi would add both size and speed. They both have similar draft pedigrees and both have unproven but unquestionable upside to them. Although potential 1-2 Ds are considerably more valuable. So maybe Paajarvi, Gernat/Marincin for Ellis?

I expect that they'd look for something different if the price is Ellis. They have some good players coming up in their system, and aiming for a lower-cost stopgap is a smarter play.

I like his potential, but IMO with the addition of Schultz we have a lot less need for Ellis' player type. I'd sooner keep Paajarvi at this point and groom him into a top 6 guy if possible or at worst a 3rd line checking winger that can add some offense.

Why would we add Marincin to the deal? We have J. Schultz and Petry as our top 2 RHD, I'm not convinced that Ellis would play more minutes than either of these 2 guys. Marincin is still a gamble, but if he can fill out a bit, he could be one hell of a prospect.

And we would rather keep Ellis. No reason for either team to do this deal. The only way I see an Ellis deal happening is Ellis+(Fish,Legs,Wilson,Hornqvist, someone) for a top pairing D or top line C. Which will be a tough sell to other teams.

I doubt you see Ellis dealt.

Just for fun:

How much would we have to add to R. Smith for Ellis?

As an Oiler fan, I like the idea of adding Ellis even at the cost of MPS + ?

While we have great D prospects, Ellis has superlative offensive upside. He would add to a potent PP.

We already added Justin Schultz for free, not that we couldn't still use a guy like Ellis, but having Schultz makes the need to add a guy like Ellis decline significantly. Unless you think that he's a surefire #1D I don't see why we should pursue him having J. Schultz and Petry as our top 2 RHD.

This was all hypothetical. I just wanted to see from an Oil perspective what his value would be. Or for that matter, what any team might offer for him.

Voracek/Simmonds for Ellis? I know Philly desperately needs an offensive D. But despite the loss of Jagr, they should still have a ton of secondary scoring.

Ellis is presently penciled in on the NHL roster. I honestly don't see him leaving unless it's part of a package to bring in a better (or more NHL-proven) defenseman. If you're looking to add a defenseman, Nashville isn't your source this year.

His size "issue" is more of a myth than anything and a negative stigma that's super annoying. He's the same size as Dan Boyle and he turned out okay.

He's gonna be okay.

Any of the young D-men minus Blum (Josi, Ellis, Ekholm) at this point would take overpayment based on need. Though I like the idea of MPS, it would take more.

With the loss of Suter over Free Agency, there is no way that they deal Ellis. They will be looking at him to step in and start taking over some of those minutes and PP time.

We'd rather keep Ellis than trade him for MPS, and Oilers fans would rather keep MPS than trade him for Ellis. I guess this one was DOA.

Had we not signed Schultz it might be a different story from our side. This was the beauty of adding him as an UFA, one less glaring hole for us to fill via the draft or trade.

I wouldn't. Ellis will play next year, whereas Merrill is staying in school.
