Today is decision time for Wayne Gretzky.

Does he ask Doan to sign in Vancouver or Phoenix?

No way that happens. He may as well commit to PHX if that's true because the Coyotes are there for at least two more seasons.

He's staying a Coyote.

Don't want the Nucks picking him up, we will pay too much for too long. With Burr/Edler/Higgy becoming UFAs we can't afford to be bogged down by a 35+ deal

1. Doan signs here.

2. Lockout cancels whole season.

3. Doan comes to camp, struggles.

4. Clear he lost a step due to being 37 and a year out of hockey.

5. Contract becomes an albatross.

6. Instead of being the 'final piece' like he should have been for the Canucks, ends up being a cap problem.

See it happening. Love being a Canucks fan, so much to be positive about.

Burr and Edler can be re-signed by losing Ballard. Higgins probably won't be back unless it's for around the same money he's at now.

And if there is a lockout, he'll only be another year older.

I say Ballard is as good as gone next season. Luongo coming off the books and bringing in futures will be a huge help and Raymond could possibly go with him... That's more than enough cap space to re-sign our players and hopefully some of our young guns can contribute.

As long as it's 4 years under 5.5 I can live with.

I want to make sure we have cap space for the deadline just in case perry or getzlaf make it there.

If we are picking up Doan then its imperative the deal only lasts until Schneids/Kes become UFA's. Sure we could afford the others by moving KB4 and Luo bug that doesn't give us any breathing room for other acquisitions based on who we have to renewq.

I doan't care enough to look it up, but can the Canucks guarantee Doan's salary even if there is a lockout? Money talks.

Isn't that what the big signing bonuses are for and have been the trend for the last few years?

It's nice to feel excited about hockey stuff again amidst all the CBA stuff. Fingers crossed on this one.

It's fascinating to look at the hatred that erupts on the tns message board under the articles there, Doan hasn't even signed in Vancouver and the haters are out in full force

In the scenario we sign Doan...

- Raymond may go before this season starts, seeing the only slot available would be on the fourth line.
- Next season we drop Alberts, Malhotra, Raymond and a glutton of fourth liners.
- I doubt Higgins signs for higher than $2.5m unless he has a playoff beast mode. In which, we'll make room.
- Either Luongo or Schneider will be gone.

In short, we have plenty of money to sign Edler, Burrows and Higgins while adding Doan to the mix.

Def a part of it, but he is still going to be getting a large salary.

Dominos to fall after Doan signs here (assuming he does)

-Burrows and/or Edler will sign extensions. (not sure if tagging room will be an issue)
-lockout will happen
-new cba will be signed (hopefully soon)
-Luongo gets traded, minimal cap hit comes back
-depending on where cap sits 1-2 of Raymond/Ballard/Booth gets traded to make space.

This is all for leverage in negotiations for a contract with PHO, IMO.

We always forget Ballard. Ballard will be gone - there are still teams out there looking for quality defensive depth.
