Don't underestimate Shane Doan's conditioning. He is in better shape than a lot of players in their prime.

Agreed, case by case for sure.

You'll see however that the ones it helped most tended to be finesse-based players who blossomed in the "new" NHL. There will be no changes this year, just lost time for a 35 year old player who plays a physically demanding style of hockey. I don't think anyone can really predict the affect it will have on one player, but there are definitely factors in play that could have negative (or positive) affects on Doan's career.

Despite this, I'm still crossing my fingers for Vancouver. Sometimes you have to make some risky decisions to bring the team to a higher level, I think this COULD be it depending on the lockout's affect on Doan.

I would love that.
Smyth Horcoff Doan would be a fantastic third line.

Too bad we won't get to see it...

I dont mean that hes washed up now. Just saying that you never know where he would be after a year of no hockey. Could hurt him. And the team who signed him as well.

Cap has always gone up so lets say it goes up 1M. Theres 2.765M in cap space already next year without having to let guys walk. Burrows is looking for a 2-2.5M raise so lets say he gets 2.25M of it.

That leaves 0.495M in cap space. Let Malhotra walk thats 2.5M in cap space. Edler makes 3.25M so giving him almost a 3M raise should be fine for him seeing how most top d-men make about 7M.

Problem pretty much solved. Now we just need 700k cleared for a backup and about 2M for raises to others and about 2M to replace players. let Alberts walk thats 1.225M and trade Raymonds rights for a 7th at the draft another 2.25M thats 3.5M almost for raises and one is a healthy scratch the other would be a 4th line winger if Doan were here so easily replaced
So just move Luongo for......nothing?
Great asset management.

Keep this thread about Doan. We definitely don't need two Lu threads.

This has taken a while but we're finally going to find out where he's playing. This might be his last big contract.

And people thought the Schultz circus was bad.....

It would be a big move for Vancouver to add him as long as they don't sign him to too long of a term.

Pretty relieved that NYR is out of the discussion. To sign an over-the-hill player at 35+ contract that'll stick on your cap, I'd be hesitant to take him at 5m for multiple years. Just screams Drury 2.0.

That's assuming 35+ contracts will be dealt with the same way in the new CBA. I actually think they will re-work that.

Drury scored the clutches goals but isn't the type of player the NYR needed and the NYR were a pretty terrible team when they signed him hoping to right the ship with him.

They might, but it's not set in stone, neither is there an indication that the 35+ rule will be removed. I'd rather not take the risk. I don't see Doan having much playing time either.

Doan will either be our 1st line RW with the Sedins or 2nd line with Kesler. Play time isn't an issue.

EDIT: Never mind, I guess you meant for NYR.

NYR weren't a terrible team in 06-07.

They had a lot of youngsters in the roster at the time, while their elite players were getting up there in age.

They swept a division winner in round 1, but lost 4 games to 2 against the President Trophy winning Sabres. Chris Drury scored the game tying goal against the Rangers in game 5 with less than 30 seconds remaining. They went on to lose game 6, but they were pretty neck and neck with the highest scoring team in the league.

Signing Gomez and Drury, along with talent already included in Shanahan, Jagr, Straka, Nylander,t and youngsters like Dubinsky, Tyutin, Girardi, Callahan, Staal and Lundqvist looking to make an impact, they looked like they were on the cusp of becoming cup contenders. Obviously it didn't turn out that way, for a variety of reasons. Drury's play went into a steep decline, Jagr/Shanahan/Staka/Nylander all slowed down, Gomez was producing, but went cold for long stretches even whilst putting up points and the defense looked brutal as they were relying too heavily on the young guys. In hindsight, it was a good move.

Drury was fine for his 1st year, but his play took a steep drop at year 2 and looked brutal in yrs 3 and 4. I see similarities between Doan and Drury, mainly because of their aggressive forecheck playing styles. 1 yr at 4mil is fine, but if not, nice meeting you.

In an alternate universe where he signs with the Oilers, he'd likely take 2nd line RW.

He thinks that Eberle and co can keep scoring at a 70 pt+ pace without having to handle tough minutes at some point therefore Doan would only be a 3rd liner.
