Also, everyone chirps Bryz for getting 5.6 a year. He has same gp, more wins, fewer loses, more shutouts then Lehtonen, yet this is a good deal for a goalie who is oft injured?
Lol are you serious?

Bryz last year: 2.48 GAA .909 SV%
Lehtonen last year: 2.33 GAA .922 SV%

Basing a goalie's values on wins.. righttt

People who think this is a bad signing don't watch the West. Kari has been the Stars MVP since he came over 2 years ago. He was the first player to start working out again this offseason. His commitment to his fitness and his play have never been stronger. He's a completely different person than he was in Atlanta, and his play has shown it. Dallas's defense has been atrocious the past 2 years, and he's bailed us out almost every single night. He was the reason we even had a chance to make the playoffs.

And if we hadn't signed him here, what should have Dallas done? Run with a 5'9 Richard Bachman as our starter until Campbell is ready in 3-4 years? Signed an unproven guy like Lindback or Bob and joined the ranks of TOR, CLB, and TBL desperate for goaltending stability? Given up assets to sign Luongo who would have blocked Campbell even more? C'mon, use your heads. He didn't give us a discount, it won't win the best contract in the NHL poll anytime soon, but this deal is more than fair.

Great contract.
This is what HFBoards has a problem with...they forget that Atlanta's Lehtonen was essentially a fat***, very unconditioned in terms of athleticism and had injury problems because of said unconditioned body. When he came to Dallas, it was almost like day-night, Lehtonen was then very motivated, very driven and improved his conditioning, to be the goaltender that Dallas needs. Like yourself, I also see a correlation between health, performance, and physical conditioning.

I've also heard dumb assertions here saying Lehtonen had 1 good year...he actually had 2 very damn good years in Dallas (and some more as a Thrasher prior to being injury prone).

Are you unaware that collusion among owners or GMs to artificially lower the market price of free agents is illegal by Canadian and US law?

What about this is not getting through?

Good deal for Lehtonen. It could be a good deal for the Stars also, if he can continue to improve and help them advance to a playoff berth. IMO he's currently a 5mil a year player.

Artifically lowering the market price on free agents =/= signing no free agents

As a Wings fan I hate this deal, you just killed us in the Howard negotiations.

Seems Stars fans are okay with this and I guess that is all that counts. I find it a bit high especially considering his injury problems. But Lehtonen has tons of talent, I don't think anybody should question that.

It's still managers colluding to affect a market.

You sure about that? Given that the current goaltending trend suggests only short-term, high-level success for goaltenders, I'd say this is still something of a risky deal. By numbers alone, its much more likely that this deal bites Dallas in the ass within the next few years than it proves a good contract. I'd think the Luongo, Bryzgalov, Giguere, Huet, Nabokov, Fleury, Niemi, Anderson, Backstrom deals of recent years would've deterred franchises from offering long-term, high-paying deals to goaltenders who are anything but career-long producers a la Lundqvist and Brodeur.

So when Howard signs a similar deal you'll be singing the same tune, right?

As I said before that is a big part of the reason I hate this deal. No I don't want Howard at 5.9 million, I was hoping 5 or 5.25 that just isn't going to happen without a rollback on salaries now. His agent must be very happy about some of the goalie contracts going out the last bunch of months.

Loungo's price just went up.

Solid deal for both sides if Lehtonen manages to stay healthy.

Good deal other than the no trade clause. The Stars need to stop giving those with every extension.

Agree to disagree I guess. I think a temporary collective bargaining measure is different that colluding to affect a market.

I can't see how agreeing to stall negotiations with all players until a new CBA is signed could be collusion.

I say agree to disagree because this is really just me typing out long responses and you replying with single sentences that say "yeah but collusion".

For the record, I'm not even positive that I am right, but I am not going to continue debating with myself.

There's just much more of an incentive for the owners to get these deals done. With Kari, he was headed for UFA status after this season. If we see a repeat of the last lockout, where they counted that year against their contracts, that could've meant that Kari reached free agency before Dallas had an opportunity to work out an extension. Then there's the situation with the out clauses that I brought up earlier. The potential benefits of putting up a "united front" before the CBA negotiations don't even come close to the negatives of possibly losing the player in free agency or at least losing them for the rest of the season if there is one because they don't have an out clause.

Now, if the league told Nieuwendyk he couldn't sign Kari to this contract and threatened to penalize him for doing so, that's where you get into the murky legal waters with collusion. Of course, the NFL got away with this over the summer, but I'm getting off topic.

Lehtonen wasn't signed to a 10 year cap circumvention contract. For the 5 years Lehtonen is a Star, Quick is getting paid more.
