The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed their 2012 first-round draft picks, defensemen Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta, to three-year entry-level contracts, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Quote:
Pouliot, 18, was the first of Pittsburgh’s two first-round draft picks after being chosen 8th overall with the selection acquired in a draft-night trade from the Carolina Hurricanes.
Quote:
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Pouliot had a breakout season with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2011-12, ranking second among team blueliners behind fellow Penguins prospect Joe Morrow with 59 points (11G-48A) in 72 regular-season games.
Quote:
Maatta, 18, was drafted by the Penguins with the No. 22-overall selection in the 2012 NHL Draft held at CONSOL Energy Center.
Quote:
He earned a berth on the OHL First-Team All-Rookie squad after tallying 32 points (5G-27A) and a plus-25 rating in 58 regular-season games.
http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.ht...id=DL|PIT|home

Maatta and Pouliot signing means that 20 of 30 of last June's first round have signed contracts. Of the ten remaining unsigned 5 (Trouba, Jankowski, Matheson, Schmaltz and Skjei) are collegiate players who cannot sign without losing their collegiate eligibility; 3 are playing in Europe (Tervainen, Vasilevski, Hertl) and just 2 are playing in the CHL (Samuelsson and Koekkeok).

Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed defenceman Evan McEneny. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McEneny, 18, had 0 goals and 2 points in 2 games for Kitchener of the OHL last season after tearing his ACL in the 2nd game of the season. He was never drafted, though he was 211th overall (out of 211 players) on the CSS North American Skaters list last Spring.

Nashville, Tenn. (September 13, 2012) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has signed 2012 second-round draft pick Colton Sissons to a three-year entry-level contract.
Quote:
Sissons, 18 (11/5/93), is entering his second season as captain of the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets in 2012-13. A season ago, the 6-0, 187-pound right wing ranked second on Kelowna in goals (26), and tied for third in points (41), in addition to pacing the club in power-play goals (13).

The North Vancouver, B.C., was Nashville's second choice, 50th overall (second round), in 2012 Entry Draft

As someone who got to see a lot of Sissons, I would be SHOCKED if he never made the NHL. He's one of the youngest (maybe the youngest, not sure) captains in Kelowna Rockets history, competes hard every night and is a better scorer than often given credit for.

Those players being sent to junior such as Ryan Murray....does that mean that even if there is no lockout, they can't be called up during the season unless there's injury?

Nope. Word came out the other day, after much suppositions one way or the other, that players returned to junior would still be able to play in the NHL whenever the inevitable lock-out ends.

Essentially the same as what happened in the 1994-95 lockout. Guys like Jason Weimer, Alexandre Daigle, etc. were sent back, played in juniors, then when the lockout ended they were recalled to the NHL.

Buffalo has signed G Andrey Makarov. Makarov, 19, played 54 games last season for Regina of the WHL, posting a GAA of 3.01 to go with a Save PCT of .913. Makarov was never drafted.

He plays for Saskatoon, not Regina.

Good for him. He must of been devastated that he didn't get drafted.

Played most of the last two seasons on the worst Jr. B team in Ontario, signs an NHL contract. Not bad.

BTW, figured I'd put this in here. In August or September, NHL teams were able to make a list of 3 players they could assign to juniors in the event of a lock-out but recall to their team when the lock-out ends.

Quote:
Anaheim: Richard Rakell, John Gibson
Boston: Dougie Hamilton
Buffalo: Mikhail Grigorenko
Carolina: Ryan Murphy, Victor Rask
Columbus: Boone Jenner, Ryan Murray
Dallas: Radek Faksa, Matej Stransky, Brett Ritchie
Edmonton: Nail Yakupov, David Musil
Florida: Jonathan Huberdeau
Minnesota: Matthew Dumba
Montreal: Alex Galchenyuk
NY Islanders: Ryan Strome, Griffin Reinhart
Ottawa: Cody Ceci, Stefan Noesen
Philadelphia: Scott Laughton
Pittsburgh: Scott Harrington, Olli Maatta, Derrick Pouliot
St. Louis: Ty Rattie
Toronto: Morgan Rielly, David Broll
Vancouver: Frank Corrado
Washington: Thomas Wilson
Winnipeg: Mark Scheifele
Some players not listed are in the AHL/Overseas (Nicklas Jensen, J.T. Miller, Zemgus Girgensons). As the article listing the players states, just because a player is on the list, does not automatically mean said player will be recalled when the lock-out ends, just that they could be.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...medium=twitter

Any interesting omissions?

Awesome to get a visual on just how highly the Stars seem to value Stransky.
