Lucic is a unique player and no doubt he adds value to any team. I believe he has a shorter shelf life than a lot of more mobile skill guys in the game, and it's just a product of his style. His agent would be negotiating with this in mind, knowing Lucic will not be cashing in on his UFA years the same way some of the skill guys will be. I think it's smart by the B's because I wouldn't want to start commiting long term and paying a premium for UFA years for a guy who plays the game like Lucic does.
Sorry but I find this hilarious coming from someone with Kessel in their SN.
Why? A 24 year old 4 time 30 goal scorer and PPG player last year isn't worth 5.5 a year?

Playmakers are rare these days and are highly regarded.
Lucic, can bring all those elements to a game plus intimidate the opposition. Lucic forechecking you is on the mind of many defenseman playing the puck. I cant think of too many forwards that can do that in this league. And btw lucic scored 5 less points than kane last year so really think long and hard about the value of this unique player.
Here's the thing... you know Kane is going to put up points. Even in an off year last year where he had his lowest point total in his career he had 66 points. Lucic at the same age has had 27, 42, 20, 62 and 60... his career high is lower than Kane's career low and their the same ages.. you don't know Lucic is going to score 60 every year... you do with Kane. That is the difference.
Boston has had one hell of an off-season. Is Lucic overpayed? Absolutely. That's okay though. They keep a very dynamic player and have enough strong deals that it doesn't matter. Losing him over 6m vs. 5m would have been terrible.
Bruins fan here..............eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkk. Overpayment. I wouldn't think he was worth that much. Chiarelli is going to make some future moves with all these players he's signed. I don't know how these contracts are going to fit under the cap. ( i know the numbers work out), but he still has some work to do. Someone is going to be the odd man out with this deal.
Take Savard's contract off the books and we are sitting at $53.3 million committed to next season. Yes, Horton and Ference are UFA and they have no goaltenders under contract next year (Rask is RFA and will sign) but I think it is pretty manageable.
Chiarelli is going to let this team make another run. If it does not work out he can make hockey trades (Pevs and Chris Kelly would be good trade bait to clear cap room and give the team flexibility).
He is showing these players on the this roster trust and commitment. If they return the favour he keeps it together for as long as he can. If they fail he makes moves to fix it.
This contract does not lock them into anything in my opinion.
I don't think anyone really cares about the Bruins spending the money but rather the cap limitations for Bruins fans and the bar it's setting for other teams upcoming FA. For example as a Leaf fan if Lupul puts up 60+ points again he'd probably get around Grabo money before... now he'll want 6+
Yeah.. Cause Lucic game is all about pts and Lupul can make a case his game is like his...
Yep. Every team in the league would pay Lucic $6m.
Exactly. There is only one other player in the NHL (I think it's Perry) that had at least 25g, 60pts and 100pim the last 2 years. Add the physical intimidation, the fighting skills and the fact that he's only 24y and 29 GM would be all over him with offers higher if he ever reached FA.
