Predators sign Kevin Klein to 5 year/14.5 M extension

KWilsonPreds ‏@KWilsonPreds
We interrupt your college football Saturday to announce #Preds sign Kevin Klein to a 5-year, $14.5 million extension

Renaud P Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS
Predators have signed Kevin Klein to a five-year, $14.5 million contract.

2.9 M cap hit. Seems a bit expensive.

You beat me to it, Marc! Was typing it out and my screen froze up because of the Google calculator and my poor math skills.

It does seem a little high, but I think Nashville wanted to make sure they were able to keep a couple vet d-men around after losing Suter and Hamhuis in consecutive summers (Not to mention whatever they decide to do with Weber next summer. I mean, I'm sure they'd like to keep him, but he may decide he wants out, one never knows) and also I'm guessing after Klein looked really good in the playoffs, they might have gotten word that teams were interested. I know, I remember after one game against Detroit last April, there were a whole bunch of "Klein to [insert favourite team here]" threads.

Good deal imo, Klein's a good young defenseman.

Very solid! Anything under $4M for a solid top 4 defender is a great deal.

With Suter gone I'm guessing Klein is going to be getting huge minutes for Nashville. Seems like they're anticipating that his value will skyrocket, so they want to lock him up before he gets to that level.

He could easily have demanded and signed for $4M in the opinion of most Preds fans. He PKs and has some untapped offensive potential. Solid team guy who does whatever he's asked and never complains. Very good skater and isn't going to be pushed around. This is not an overpayment, it's actually a favorable deal for the team.

He might see some increased minutes, but the plan is for Josi to skate with Weber, so Klein will likely stay in the same role he's been playing.

I was saying a few weeks ago that I would be comfortable giving Klein something like $3.5m-$4m under the cap at the time. He is a solid #3 defenseman who can log ~20 minutes per night against some great talent. He makes mistakes, but all defensemen do. I like this deal a lot.

I thought he was a bit of a whipping boy on the Preds board for some reason, yet they all love the signing. So I retract my statement.

Phew. If he didn't sign, he might have had to go back to acting.

Steal contract. Easily could've gotten near 5m in free agency. Klein should fire his agent.

oh he is. Pred fans are bipolar. Klein is much the same as Legwand will be a whipping boy for life for some loves by others

I really like Klein. Seems like a little bit on the high end for him, but still a good signing for the Preds.

He pretty much got the Andrej Sekera deal, but for 2 more years, and those two are probably pretty comparable. Not a bad deal at all.

I'm not sure if some of Klein's more vocal detractors come around the neutral boards very much, but you may hear from some later. It's pretty tough to speak ill of a $2.75m cap hit for a second pairing defenseman, though. Especially so after the playoffs he had.

Solid signing. Guy is a gamer each and every night. Congratulations Nashville, you earned it with all the D frustration lately.
