Nail Yakupov KHL Thread | 7GP: 5G-2A-7PTS | Next Game: Oct. 19th 6AM MST

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=405343

Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers are sending some of their best young players to the American Hockey League so they can keep playing during the NHL lockout.

The team assigned Ryan-Nugent Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi, and Justin Schultz to the Oklahoma City Barons on Saturday.

Ironically, both Nugent-Hopkins and Eberle never played a game in the minors before jumping directly from junior to the NHL.

The Oilers also assigned last year's first overall pick, Nail Yakupov, to his junior club, the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League.

Taylor Hall was not sent down, as he is still considered to be an injured player.

The following players were also assigned to Oklahoma City: Cameron Abney, Mark Arcobello, Tyler Bunz, Dane Byers, Philippe Cornet, Yann Danis, Brandon Davidson, Taylor Fedun, Curtis Hamilton, Teemu Hartikainen, Tanner House, Anton Lander, Martin Marincin, Ryan Martindale, Kristians Pelss, Tyler Pitlick, Alex Plante, Toni Rajala, Olivier Roy, Colten Teubert, Antti Tyrvainen, and Chris VandeVelde.
Nice to see RNH, and Eberle playing together. Not to mention the benefit of Schultz and Paajarvi there to hopefully build on future chemistry.

It's funny outside of Smid, Petry and Dubnyk you can almost make the lines that people want going forward with that group.

We need to sign the 2 toughest players available for the AHL.

Don't want people making a name for themselves running Ebs, Nuge, Hall (after hes recovered), etc.

Yak will go to KHL IMO. He has nothing left to do in Sarnia.

Eberle actually did play some games for Springfield.

And that is fine since he is under contract with us when the NHL actually starts up. Best of luck to him.

We're currently talking about this in the OKC thread. Here's what IMO the lineup will look like:

So it looks like for at least now Hall won't be sent to OKC, thankfully neither will Potter. IMO guys like Pelss, Rajala, Martindale. House, and Davidson are likely ticketed for Stockton along with one of Bunz or Roy.

Here's how I see it playing out.

Paajarvi-RNH-Eberle
Hartikainen-Arcobello-Pitlick
Byers-Lander-Tyrvainen
Hamilton/Cornet-Vande Velde-Abney/Grant (if he's still Barons property)

Teubert-J. Schultz
Plante-Fedun
Marincin-Helmer/other AHL vet

Danis
Roy

If Helmer is playing that means that we will have 5 RHD in our top 6. Marincin will be the only lefty. I don't recall if OKC retained Yeo's rights or not, but it'd sure help if we could add a top 4 quality LHD at the AHL level. Perhaps we'll see an AHL trade to shore that up? Davidson is the only other LHD that would be available if he's ready.

So how will this work with their contracts.... Are they burning a year of their current contracts, but getting AHL salary?

I wonder if the Oilers coaching staff will go down to OKC and help out there? I don't mean be on the bench during the games, but it wouldn't hurt to be there for practices and drills and such. Don't step on the OKC coaching staff's toes, but what else are they going to do, might as well be there when the opportunity presents itself, working with some of the players on various things.

I thought I remember reading that Grant signed somewhere else.

Man, that team is stacked. I can't see Cornet playing on the 4th line, but I guess we'll see.

Larionov says Yakupov will either play in the Kontinental Hockey League for his hometown Russian team Niznekamsk, or possibly in Sweden or Finland if there’s an NHL lockout, for however long it takes. He won’t be returning to junior in Sarnia, even though he has junior eligibility left.

I seriously doubt that the lockout lasts the entire year.

Still technically injured, so I think he could wind up there in a month or so. I do wonder what's going on, though, because I would think going through training camp there (given that he's skating now) would be beneficial.

if some of our star players gets in a rut, how will this affect his confidence? Mixed emotions about this IMO

Hall being injured prevents them from assigning him right now, I think.

So you're saying you can't lose if you don't play, right? Just quit hockey and hide in a cave until the playoffs roll around?

If there's something that will kill their confidence, it's finishing last or second last ever since they joined the league. Being in the AHL and learning to win every night will be GOOD for their confidence.

Maybe if the lockout lasts long he can go join them when he is healthy. Not sure though

Bingo, and RNH and Eberle are way too good to be in a rut at the NHL level.

AHL goalies should be very scared. They should dominate at the AHL level.

lol, this league and the teams are idiotic. Lockout....but before hand we will sign every player and his dog to long term big money deals while we can.

Lockout, we will assign a bunch of players who have no business playing in the minors to the minors so they can play.

It looks like we have a stacked team...BUT...I'd imagine other teams will be sending down their young stars as well. It might not be quite as stacked as we seem to think.
