For someone who was a healthy scratch in the playoffs, it seems a little steep. I think he's a ways off from being a scoringline fixture-- although we will likely be forced to play him there out of necessity.

IMO, he deserves a 1-year 1 million "prove it" contract. If he proves to be a more consistent and ups his goal totals, he'd be in line for a 3+ million dollar extension. If not, we'd give him a qualifying offer until he does prove it.

I agree that this one might be a bit high. It's probably too much for this season (if there's a season) and the team is hoping that it will be a bargain the season after. His next contract has potential to be for some big bucks if he comes close to expectations.

While based solely on his play last season this appears to be a bit high, it's a contract that is based on his potential and continued development. I believe Smith will actually outplay this contract in the next three years.

There is no question, Smith got worn down over the course of an 82 game schedule last season coming from college. But he realized that and took advantage of being scratched by learning how to adjust his lifestyle and training routine to play the game for a full season. At the end of the year, he joined the US team again at the World Championships and immediately stepped in on the first line and didn't look out of place.

Craig Smith has a lot of potential still to be discovered. I'm confident that this will turn out to be another good signing by Poile.

Simple-- CBA expiration. It's happening all around the league.

This year, I doubt he plays up to that contract. Year after? he will easily earn it. 2014-2015? This will be a steal.

As you say though, this year he's still playing on his ELC. I agree, Smith will outplay this deal...

Smith is going to be great. I wish it was a 10 year deal.

He didn't tail off 'horribly' He tailed off then Trozt played him on the 4th line and he didn't get a sniff of PP time. This was a case of him be worn down and Trotz piling on.

Does anyone know if he is playing in the AHL to start the season?
