Can't be doing us much good to have an empty arena during the lockout either. No Devils with the Nets already gone, JVB will have to scramble to fill the building.

I saw this post on the business board. The guy is saying that the Devils are a drain on NHL resources, on par with places like Raleigh or Phoenix.

Is this really the case? Aren't we a profitable franchise at this point, we just have long term debt issues from the arena construction?

He's an idiot. Yes our debt issues are based on the arena.

A lot of people on the business forum are not in tune with reality.

So how does the Lockout hurt us?

a year without paying 67 mill for players, but also a year of revenue gone

what happens now?

Probably doesn't help us with the repayment on that loan.

Nope, and think of it this way. When the season finally starts some people are gonna be pissed off. A lot of the fans who may have came to games last year might not wanna come this year to show they're pissed off. I wouldn't be surprised if attendance went down if not slightly. Now that might be the case in a lot of cities with NHL hockey, but when you're in the situation we're in that hurts.

We would be saving about 56M on salaries (dunno where you got 67M from) this season however losing about 100M of revenues.

The thing that hurts about the lockout is that if/when games are canceled, it will likely be short periods of time, with little notice. In the overwhelming majority of cases, it won't be enough time to get anything in for those lost dates. If everyone knew now the first X amount of games were not happening, and there was 1-3 months to fill those dates, there's a decent chance the revenue the building brought in for that time frame was comparable to that if the Devils were playing. I bet they do make more money on these events/shows than hockey games. But there's no way to schedule them in this situation, so its just going to be lost money almost every vacated date.

With Ray Chambers being part of the group that invested in the YES Network, and now that 49% of the network is being sold, his shares are being reduced to 12%, resulting in him earning 5x his original investment with the network

Being that Chambers is still on the books as a part owner of the Devils, and despite the fact that he and JVB aren't on great terms, will the Devils see any of the money he is making going to help the arena debt?

Ha I don't think so, but it is a good question to talk about.

Probably not. My guess would be that the two ventures are not connected in any way.

If there is any connection between the two, I would guess its that he was more willing to sell his stake in YES (or at least maybe a greater percentage than he would have otherwise) to help balance what he has lost with the Devils/Prudential Center over the years. Otherwise I would tend to agree they're not directly related.

Was Chambers the reason the Yes network was trying to acquire the Devils TV rights ( along with SNY ) before Dolan stepped up and gave the team a massive offer to stick with MSG ?

I assume they had a deeper connection with YES at the time than just him. Weren't the Devils somewhat involved in the whole YankeeNets things back in the day? I thought Lou was possibly on their board or something along those lines. I don't remember the specifics, but I could have sworn the Devils had some connection to the whole thing aside from merely playing in the same building as the Nets at the time.

The Yankees Group, which owns the Yankees and YES, owned the Devils through PuckHoldings. VBK was a minority parnter in that ownership group and once the Yankees decided they didn't need the money losing Nets and Devils, VBK stepped in and created the current ownership group for the Devils.

Lou is on the Yankees board, I believe. He got a ring the last time they won the World Series.

Imagine Michael Kay wanting to do hockey - "Henrique to Kovalchuk...SEE YA, A long one time blast from the point."
