In Benn's court in the sense that the Stars have made him a crappy offer and Benn is waiting for an offer commensurate with the marketing built around him.

It really has nothing to do with marketing. Benn wants a deal commensurate with his performance and comparable to the deals other marquee RFAs coming off their ELCs are signing.

My point about marketing is when you look at it from the perspective of the Stars's negotiating position. The Stars market him like a guy who is a superstar in the making (with frequnet nods to him being the "next Modano"), yet the Stars clearly don't want to pay him like a superstar in the making. The Stars stalled to let the CBA expire all so they don't have to give him the 7-10 year deal.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. They likely want to give Benn a deal that doesn't cut into his UFA years so that when he comes up as a RFA again they can sign him to one of those 7-10 year deals. Its about keeping an asset as long as possible.

This was my thinking too. I don't think money is an issue, but term is.

I'm not sure about that. How many times has this organization given a player a deal that is six years or more? Besides Daley, can you name a player?

Golgoski's was 6 years, right?

Eriksson? I'm sure I'm missing some more.

I don't think the Stars want to pay any RFA the way some other teams are prepared to. Nieuwendyk is Burke's protege, the man who bemoaned the death of the 2nd contract. The current version of the Stars have had 3 excellent RFAs come up for deals -- they drove a hard bargain with Neal, they managed to rope Eriksson into an extremely team-friendly deal, and now they're driving a hard bargain with Benn. It's how this organization operates. Now if the player has any sort of leverage then they fold immediately and bend over backwards it seems.

Loui got six years? Well that's only two. Honestly I'd bet on a two year bridge contract followed by a 5-6 year deal that eats up the UFA years.

Brenden Morrow is also on a six year deal.

I'm sure Modano was on one at some point, but that's going a bit too far back to be relevant IMO.

Precedents in sports business always vexed me.

The idea is to be the one setting the precedents.

Well, since the trade thread got bumped...

Liking this contract more and more every game, especially compared to what Quick, Lundqvist, Rinne, etc. are making.

All the best wishes for Kari "unstoppable" Lehtonen to his 30th birthday!

If you buy a new jersey you should put his name on your back!

Lehtonen is competing against himself at "Save of the year" category at this rate.

Happy Birthday Kärppä.
