“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent. If we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death, our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” - Stanley Kubrick
Read somewhere that since 1992 the NHL has over 1,500 games locked out, nearest was MLB then NBA I think with the NFL having 0.
Granted, the NFL schedule is 1/5 the length of the NHL schedule and they have a much longer off-season to address this stuff, but the point remains. The NFL understands that this crap (particularly twice in eight years) is detrimental to the league.
I don't know why so many people are anti-PA right now.
Pretty much anyone who's written a published article on the topic is pro-PA, and they actually have incentive to be doing the opposite. I still believe the NHL's first offer was so absurd that it derailed the whole process.
I cannot side with the owners. Cannot. They got everything they wanted last time and now they want more. What's to stop them from cutting another 17% in 8 years? And another 17% after that?
The players are right. Taking their share and continuing to mismanage the finances of teams isn't going to make the poorer franchises stable. Revenue sharing is absolutely the way to go.
You do understand that if the players win, Evgeni Malkin (and everyone like him) will likely end up with the Flyers, Rangers, or Leafs. We (as fans of a small market team) will end up with the scraps.
The players winning (assuming Fehr was serious when he mentioned going after the cap) means we go back to seeing ~5 teams absolutely dominate with rosters built like the Yankees, while you have about 10 teams as bad as the Blue Jackets.
Nobody is right in this situation, but the owners winning makes the sport a Hell of a lot more healthy than if the players win.
I think it's silly that they couldn't just extend the current CBA for a year while ramping up negotiations. The post-2005 regime worked pretty well for almost everyone. Another year of it wasn't going to kill the NHL.

except for half of the teams in the league if their numbers are to be believed.

exactly. i can't, for the life of me, understand how any pittsburgh fan is pro-player in this negotiation.

The NFL is the gold standard. They just know how to get it done. The NHL on the other hand gets shown up for being a second-rate league every chance it gets.

Those are always sketchy. Everyone laughed at the basketball numbers for good reason. Besides Phoenix, who else is seriously at risk of immediate relocation, much less outright folding?
I think the players don't care about yesterday's deadline, which is why I am not worried yet. Their deadline I would imagine is coming in the next couple of weeks.
I suspect vets like Iggy, who are well respected around the league and went through the last lockout, have warned the younger guys it isn't worth missing games and losing salary, hurting the integrity of the game, etc.
I think the players know if they hurt the game, it has a direct effect on their bank accounts.
Both sides are playing a game of chicken and both know they can't drive off of the cliff.
A few months ago I didn't think the players would budge off 57, but after admitting the league has teams in trouble, I think they will settle for 53 or 52 of HRR. I also feel the owners would be willing to give the players around 51.
Despite all of the negativity, I just think these kind of gaps can be closed once the real crunch time gets here.
