Isles re-sign Matt Martin to 4 year deal worth $4 million
MacDonald signed for $550k because at the time he was hanging on as a call-up 5/6 d-man. The $550k was for a one-way contract. It meant he'd have to go through waivers if the Isles sent him down, and if he cleared he'd still get $550k a year. He developed nicely into a 3-4 defenseman which makes him a steal. The slight danger is that when A-Mac's contract ends, his agent is going to look for stupid money because he got paid dirt in his last contract.
Frans' first contract was a similar situation to AMac's also which was another absolute steal. The Isles took calculated gambles and they paid off. Frans' new contract is another good contract too. I figure AMac will fall in line when his current one expires. Snow has been really good in this facet. Other than DP, there are no really bad contracts on the Isles.

One or two way contracts have no bearing on whether or not a player has to be put on and clear waivers when they're sent down.
The contract they signed Martin to is very good. Isles fans should be quite happy with this.
Snow is seriously fiscally responsible. I don't get how he consistently gets these guys to take less than comparable salaries around the NHL. Is he sending these agents stupid pills? I'm in awe of this one especially. Has now joined AMac's contract as the best value in the league.
Whats even better is I have both on my keeper fantasy league...which uses a salary cap similar to the NHL
Did someone call the Police? Cause this is highway robbery
Seriously, 1 million a year? If there is one thing I can't get on Snow's ass for, it's the fact that he has negotiated some great value contracts the past couple of years. I can't really think of one bad contract on the team aside from Rick D3P0
I have plenty of issues with Snow, but he is absolutely fantastic at resigning his own players to team friendly contracts. Love that Martin is here for 4 more years.
Don't get me wrong here. Matt Martin's a fun player, he hits everything in sight, and is responsible defensively and kills some penalties, but this is still a guy that hasn't cracked the 15 point mark in two full seasons. He's a 4th liner. He's an awesome fourth liner, but still a fourth liner.
He could have gotten maybe a little more, but I don't see a guy like him being worth much more than 1M per or this contract being a steal. He's good, he'd run through a brick wall if the team asked him to. But he's still a limited player that is what he is.

I definitely agree, but I also see him as the kind of guy that can top out as your ideal 3rd line winger who can chip in 10-15 goals while hitting everything in sight and killing penalties. He's only going to get better and better, the guy has the heart of a lion.
Makes sense for both sides. I think with all the uncertainty MM went for the longer term deal. Plus 4 million for the average Joe is a pretty sweet salary for four years.
Add in the fact that he's a bruiser and could have his career ended on any of his 300 + hits throughout the year and its beginning to look like a no brainer.
Is he eligible to go to the AHL to maybe develop his offensive game?
Unless I'm mistaken, they're all eligible to play, but AHL teams need a minimum of 13 development players, 12 of which have played less than 260 pro regular season games at the beginning of the season (source). Martin has 153 NHL + 83 AHL = 236 pro games under his belt so he still qualifies as a development player.
That's a very good contract. He's one of the best 4th line players in the league and I hope to see the Isles make the playoffs within a few years because he seems like he's built for playoff hockey.
