Where do you expect the Canes to be in terms of salary spent next season?
Not sure, there have indications that the new partial ownership group will allow for increased spending to be "green lit". But the question remains as to where the cap will end up when this new CBA is agreed to. If it increases (and there's some speculation that the current way of calculating would have the cap floor around 54 million) the Canes will have to spend to keep up with the floor, if it doesn't the Canes will have more to spend then many other teams. It's worth noting that the Canes always try to spend at least 4-5 million over the floor to have some flexibility come the deadline in either direction. Basically, right now it's good to be us when going after free agents... but it would be even better if we're one of the few that has a ton of money to chuck around (IE: cap stays where it is now under new CBA). We have at least 8-10 million more to spend and not a whole lot to spend it on.
right forgot that he only has played 3 seasons in juniors so far. but yeah even 10 seems like a bit of a stretch, have to think that one of them (Sangs?) is going to be in the NHL as either the #6 or #7 guy.
Dumoulin would have to really beat the doors down to make the club. JR is probably going to want to take the same developmental approach with him as he did with Faulk and Murphy. If he does make the roster, he'll only be there briefly and will then play some time in Charlotte depending upon how quickly he picks it up.
The locks for Charlotte include Krueger, Jordan, Bellemore, and Dumoulin.
I could see Kivisto, Rissanen, Levi, Schmitz and Sova being options for the remaining two spots in Charlotte.
I feel that Sova and Schmitz will almost certainly start in Florida. I don't anticipate Kivisto being anything of note either. Rissanen likely takes a spot in Charlotte by virtue of familiarity if nothing else. I think Levi also commands a place in Charlotte. That would give them six in Charlotte.
The battle between Bobby Sanguinetti and Derek Joslin for who becomes the "veteran defender" for Charlotte to step in for whatever kid is rotated out of the lineup will be decided in camp. Charlotte likely carries eight defenders most of the season due to being able to have different looks at different players. The shuttle between Florida and Charlotte for the defense will be active. I don't think Carolina fears losing either Sanguinetti or Joslin to waivers especially at the start of the season when teams annually shuttle their overage prospects down to the AHL and in what amounts to near collusion, everybody agrees not to poach the veteran prospects for the most part due to the risk reward being so razor thin.
Murphy isn't going back to juniors, I heard someone say something about how he doesn't have much left to prove there. We have a lot of d to work with, no doubt. I can't see jr allowing more than one youngster to play up with the canes with Faulk taking a top 6 spot. Likely the kids will rotate in and out, and I can't help but think jr picks up a vet for "stability" if Allen and spacek leave.

I believe it was the man himself, JR, making that statement. I tend to agree with him for the most part but the only thing is that the choice that has to be made is CHL or NHL and that is a tough one to make. Especially when our current group tends to already lean towards soft and offensive. I just don't know if at the end of the day we're going to have any better choices than sending him back to the OHL, letting him play a big part in the WJC, and hoping that he can fine tune the rest of his game.
I mean, the possibility of a 9 game stint is certainly there and would probably make sense to have a look-see. I just don't know if the direct leap is the best choice for Murphy. Of course, I was skeptical of Faulk last year at this time too. More than skeptical actually. I wanted him to spend a full year in the A.

I would tend to agree with this. Dumoulin is a bit different in that he was in college for 3 years vs. 1 for Faulk and will be 21 when the season starts vs. 19 for Faulk. He also has a big body that can likely handle the NHL game better than some other young guys as he is 6'3 and 220lbs.
I still think he stays in Charlotte ESPECIALLY if Murphy is on the squad, but I wouldn't be totally surprised if he is on the NHL club before mid season.
Re: Murphy, it really sucks that the rule prevents him from playing in the AHL. I would hate to see him rushed to the NHL and end up being overwhelmed or even worse, hurt. His size concerns me. Even though he is a fantastic skater, it's a lot harder for him to effectively utilize that in the NHL where all the players are bigger, stronger and faster than what he is accustomed to facing. He'll have a much tougher time skating his way out of trouble like he can in the Jrs.
I'm still not sure what we have in Faulk. I think jr said he may keep a kid like Murphy around all season and just have him as the seventh guy in and out of the lineup, going to the wc's and that this may be better for him than juniors. I'm not fully sold.

I'm as big a fan of Murphy as anyone but given the chance to do it again, and knowing what we now know about the Canes defense, do you think we'd have been better off taking Sven Bartschi last year?

IMO no, Murphy was the best available at that slot, and IMO at the time better then all but 5 that went ahead of him (Nuge, Landy, Larsson, Huberdeau, Couturier, Murphy). Hamilton since then has proven to be better, but IMO that's it. We knew we had something good in Faulk, just didn't know how good. Almost every single one of our defensive prospects took a turn for the positive last year. Almost every single one of our forward prospects took a turn for the negative. I don't think anyone could have predicted that. We still made the right call IMO
added Gragnani and Terry... unsure as to whether or not Gragnani is an RFA after the contract or a UFA
I think he's an RFA again next year. From reading the trade board, Vancouver played him enough to get him 80 games experience and avoid type VI UFA status. Then when his agent wanted to go to arbitration, they declined to make a qualifying offer.
So Gragnani will be an arbitration eligible RFA next summer.
Assuming that the Semin signing means that JR is going all in this season, and there's roughly 14 million in cap space to play with. Not bad, not bad at all.
Pens fan coming in peace, but the Canes are by far my second favorite team. Came to say I love the Staal trade for both sides and the Semin signing. Staal is a great player and will be missed here in Pittsburgh. And one question: What did you Canes fans think about the potental of Brian Dumoulin? The Pens are loaded with D prospects and we know the least about him, from what I've heard he sounds like the next coming of Brooks Orpik. Go Pens and Canes
