On the heels of the NHL lockout that began Sunday, New Jersey Devils star Ilya Kovalchuk is headed home to his native Russia to play hockey during the work stoppage.
Kovalchuk will join SKA St. Petersburg of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, his agent confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com. The 29-year-old winger is not expected to begin playing until Sept. 23.
Joining Kovalchuk in the KHL will be Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin and Ottawa Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who signed with Metallurg.
Slovan beat SKA today. Without Visnovsky, who signed just prior to the game and will play against Omsk on Saturday.

As mentioned before, Zharkov plays for the CSKA Moscow with former Devils prospect Patrick Davis. If there`s anything that might interest you, just ask a question.
No Kovy rest up some more, and wait it out a little while longer!
Thanks for the stream link Getzo! Will be watching in my free time as I'm incredibly bored of not watching hockey. This offseason seems longer than last already even though we missed the playoffs.
is SKA St. Petersburg just a random team he picked or a team he was a fan of when he was a child? really curious cause majority of the other NHLers are going to their previous lockout teams or hometown teams.

They were the team he would of joined when he became a free agent 2 years ago
Kovy will most likely play with Maxim "360" Afinogenov. Would love to see him with young Tarasenko though.
Sarge is probably coming over to finish his career in the NHL with us as Sykora's replacement!
Kovy, and Afinogenov have played with each other in the Atlanta days so can't be too bad.
I can't get into teams I have no emotional attachment to either, but I'll watch the games the same way I watch other NHL teams. I'll pull for SKA St Petersburg for now cause Kovy is there.
Nah, that's just the end of any leverage the players have. They went all the way till mid-February before officially canceling in '94, I don't think they'll string it out that long this time, either way.

If I know the answer, I`ll answer it briefly.
Sweet but which team is Kovalchuk and Zharkov, it's in Russian lol.

I thought Lou should've invited him to camp one of these years. The one thing we seem to have been lacking is players that have meshed well with Kovalchuk.
