Its awfully tough for me to make a comparison to the "real world" like you did here.
The McDonalds/Wal-Mart issue is about putting the next meal on the table.
The NHL/Euro league issue is about buying a Lexus instead of a Mercedes.
If theres anything I've learned in the business world, its that the higher the dollar values get, the more political and downright nasty the negotiations become. Its just how it is.
While the standard of living is certainly different between my example and the NHL players I think the point is still justified. No matter how much money you get, and save, you still are living off those paychecks so if they need to keep that standard of living they are being driven to look elsewhere.

Owners of the teams losing money can sit on their hands and break even while the players will be losing checks.
Who has the leverage? Who do you think is going to cave first? Its clear as day. Just do it now, save yourselves some money and save everyones time and sanity.
Heard Ovechkin yesterday saying hes prepared to play the whole season over there. Thats great for him, he can stay there for all I care.
You sir are one of very few smart men on these forums. People complain the owners are getting greedy, but these small market teams that the NHL just won't let die, can't afford it.

What makes Nash more likely to injure himself in the National League A than in, say, the AHL or SEL?
Because those clown leagues clearly play on hardwood instead of ice and they wear absolutely no padding. Those lesser leagues arent sufficient to house the worldwide names from our almighty NHL.
European leagues are propped up here on HF as talented and respectful, but really they're garbage.

Outside of the KHL, which may be near the AHL in terms of talent, these Euro leagues have no fans, goofy, ad-ridden jerseys, a non-contact style of play, and castoffs who couldn't cut it in the NHL. They suck. All of them.
Nash is better off playing with the Rangers farm system with the prospects or not playing at all.
Why risk injury playing in these talentless euro leagues? The same applies for all players, not just Nash.

Plenty of Euro-league teams can beat AHL teams on a regular basis.

I see no reason why we should be as snobbish as BPL fans. Its one of the things as an MLS fan I can't really stand. We saw firsthand last year in the preseason some of the quality teams in Europe, from Frolunda onwards. Lots of former NHLers (not that that is the make or break on being a good player) well coached sides with good technical skill.
Just because guys are going to their 2nd or 3rd choice destinations shouldn;t be seen as prime time bashing season on European leagues.

In terms of player quality? Maybe some really are a massive, massive step below (DEL), some are a massive step below (NLA, SML) and others are only a step below (SEL, KHL). But that's still no reason to call them garbage leagues and saying they had no fans. And anyway, I'd say most of those leagues are at least on par with the AHL, so what's the point? Just because it's Europe it isn't garbage.

Some are, some aren't. The SEL, SM-Liiga and KHL are a step below, but the drop-off isn't enormous. Better overall than the AHL. A full AHL squad would struggle to beat a full NHL team--whereas teams from those three leagues would be far more competitive.

But many believes there is only a matter of time until SEL do it to.
It's not a problem for Hagelin though,since Södertälje plays in AS
