Things always look like it'll be a good crop. Then most of them get re-signed anyways.

Guys like Parise, Suter, Brad Richards...they tend to be the exception than the rule. And already we are seeing guys sign extensions like Burrows, Lucic, etc. I would guess that after the lockout more will do the same.

Now, if the lockout wipes out the entire season, things can change.

I think there the exception because of these factors.

With Brad Richards he went to the Rangers because of his history with John Tortorella when they were together in Tampa Bay.

Zach Parise went to the Wild because he wanted to play back home in Minnesota and Ryan Suter went there since it's very close to his home state of Wisconsin.

Aren't the Wild planning a on Koivu-Granlund 1-2 punch? I think the Wild fan was just joking.

Well obviously, yes, I was. But if we actually did want to sign him, we would have the cap space barring the cap coming down dramatically.

Bouchard's $4 million
Cullen's $3.5 million
Backstrom's $6 million.

Thats $13.5 million coming off the books with those 3 players, yet alone some other smaller contracts that will be up. But no, I highly doubt the Wild would have any interest in Zajac as long as Granlund pans out at center.

Careful, wouldn't want to be too good. I mean, it's not like depth at center is a good thing or anything.

There's this magical thing called a salary cap which makes it so that having ~38 million of a 70 million (or possible lower) budget locked up in 6 players (Koivu, Heatley, Parise, Setoguchi, Suter, Zajac) tends to cause your team to lack depth

They can still sign with Anaheim after testing the waters and seeing what the best offer is to use in their own negotiation, especially if the whole season is lost.

Why not just trade Granlund for Zajac?

Yeah, but that's under the premise that the Wild can start this year with those 3 on the roster.... right now, they're pressed up against a $70m cap which is almost certain to not be reality.

Back to the original point... yes, the UFA crop looks good, but it always does. What'll be interesting to see is how the new CBA affects signings, because it's likely to prevent the cap circumventing deals.

The Wild have more than enough depth at center.

Brodziak
Cullen
Powe
Konopka

And if I'm not mistaken I believe Torrey Mitchell has played a little center from time to time. We may not have the high end depth at center, but we have more than enough players capable of playing center should when injuries strike.

Doubt even 1/4 of them make it to UFA.

There was supposed to be a fairly good UFA Crop this year as well, but as the season goes on more and more will sign. I don't think missing a year because of the lockout will make teams any more reluctant to retain their top talent.

I wasn't just referring to center depth. Spending 38 million on 6 players means that the other 15 players on your roster have 32 million to split. You have 32 million to spend on another top six forward, a #1G, 3 top 4 D and an entire bottom six forward corps and a bottom pairing. Good luck
